Why the Battle of Ideas matters in an age of censorship

Britain is in the grip of a free speech recession, with increased restrictions on what we can say both online and off.

Over the past five years, 62,199 people have been arrested for communication offences. Some police forces have made per-capita arrests at 14 times the rate of neighbouring forces.

The free speech crisis is a national emergency.

The Battle of Ideas is a vital forum for challenging censorship and debating the most pressing issues of the day.

As the festival’s original motto puts it: “Free Speech Allowed and Free Thinkers Welcome.”

Our reaction to Andy Burnham's speech at Labour party conference

Responding to Andy Burnham’s speech at Labour party conference, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

“Burnham’s plan to abolish the triple lock will barely touch the sides of the national care system he wants to fund.

“With the welfare bill forecast to hit over £400bn by the end of this decade, alongside a long shopping list of unfunded spending promises, the bill will ultimately be placed on the backs of hardworking taxpayers.

“If the prime minister really wants to be honest, he needs to come out with a serious plan to cut welfare spending to stop Britain drifting towards a fiscal cliff edge”
