Blue Plaque for Lou Reed at the Scala

Blue Plaque for Lou Reed at the Scala

In 1972, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop played at the Kings Cross cinema in London - now called the Scala.

Where Mick Rock took the 'Transformer' and 'Raw Power' album cover photographs. I would like a blue plaque installed on the Scala venue to commemorate this.

Just a quick thank you to everyone who came along to see my little idea come to life yesterday. It was a great evening and we had a wonderful time. I met friends that I have not seen for such a long time and then I flew off into the sunset, having left a little rock 'n' roll mark on an increasingly cleaned up King's Cross. Great times.

GREAT NEWS. The blue plaque has been made by a company called croft castings in Whitby and looks beautiful.

UPDATE: Great news! As most of you will know, I have been trying to get a blue plaque put on the Scala venue in King's cross. Well, it's going ahead. The venue owners think it's a great idea and the date of the unveiling is 14 July (50th anniversary of Lou’s gig and the night Mick Rock took the photo for the album Transformer) at 5.30. There will be the superstar celebrity guest unveiler and a reception in the bar till 9pm. The plaque itself is been made by a company in Whitby, based on my design here.

Hello one and all. Just to let you know. I have redesigned the blue plaque to include the one and only Iggy Pop. It seems only right to have him and the Stooges on. They played at the King's Cross cinema on 15 July 1972, the day after Lou Reed. Mick Rock was there again to take pictures and, again, just as with Lou's 'Transformer' album one of his photos (and some on the back of the sleeve) was used for the Stooges next album cover, 'Raw Power'.

Does anyone know a contact for the scala in Kings Cross?

On 14 July 1972, Lou Reed played a concert at the Kings Cross cinema in London - now called the Scala. It was Lou’s first concert outside the US. David Bowie was there, and he introduced Lou to the Rock ‘n’ Roll photographer Mick Rock. Mick took some great photos of Lou during the concert. One of those photographs was used for the cover of Lou’s ‘Transformer’ album (produced by Bowie). The next night, Iggy and the Stooges played. And Mick was there to take the picture used on their 'Raw Power' album (again produced by Bowie). To me, and I am sure to many others, these are two of the greatest albums ever made. I would like to have a blue plaque installed on the Scala venue to celebrate these two nights in 1972. Two nights that shouldn’t be forgotten in the history of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Any help with contacts or press, or anything to make this happen, would be most welcome - please get in touch.
