Faroe Islands attend Education World Forum in London for the first time

Newly appointed Minister of Children, Education, Research and Culture, Bárður á Lakjuni, attended the Education World Forum in London this week. Providing an excellent opportunity to engage with ministers and education experts from around the world, Minister á Lakjuni also met with his counterparts in the UK, including Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson and Minister of State for Skills, Baroness Smith of Malvern, as well as Northern Ireland’s Education Minister, Paul Givan.

With Peace, Planet, Purpose and Pathways as overarching themes, much of the Forum’s discussions focussed on AI in education and the importance of both foundational learning and the key role of educators in ensuring responsible and effective use of AI tools in teaching and learning.

Faroe Islands represented at successful European Writer’s Festival # 3 in London

Faroese writer Marjun Syderbø Kjælnes took part in an engaging panel at the British Library on Sunday, together with Liliana Corobca from Moldova/Romania and Italian speaking Fabio Andina from Switzerland. Their discussion was expertly moderated by presenter and broadcaster Bidisha, with “personal histories” as its theme. 26 very diverse European countries were represented at this year’s well-attended edition of EWF, filling the British Library’s Pigott Theatre all weekend. Congratulations to the organisers, EUNIC London, who have worked in partnership with the British Library and the European Literature Network, with Rosie Goldsmith as chair of the programming panel. In addition to contributions from all participating EUNIC members, the festival is also supported by the EU Delegation to the UK and the European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK. It is a pleasure working with you all! ; EUNIC London; British Library; ; . Thanks also to FarLit for their cooperation and support 🇫🇴🇫🇴

The exhibition goes until 1 March 2026, and reviews have been unqualified in their praise. Timeout calls it "One of the most expertly curated and deeply satisfying displays of contemporary art in London in recent memory." We can only agree!

Faroes at the IMO Assembly this week

Director of the Faroese Maritime Authority, Hans Johannes á Brúgvi, is heading the Faroese delegation to the Assembly of the International Maritime Organization in London this week. The Assembly convenes every second year at IMO’s London HQ, and it is the highest decision-making body of the IMO, which is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.

The Faroe Islands joined IMO as Associate Member in 2003. Relative to the population, the Faroe Islands are a major shipping and maritime nation, with long experience as seafarers, experienced navigators and ship builders, and with a modern and competitive shipping register (FAS – www.fas.fo) which currently has 80 vessels registered under the internationally recognised Faroese flag. Active participation at IMO and full implementation of IMO’s important conventions and agreements, which set global standards for responsible shipping, is at the very heart of Faroese maritime policy today.
