"It is crucial to recognise the reasons behind Galloway's re-emergence on the British political scene and to understand why he and his party cannot be the basis of a principled left-wing alternative to Keir Starmer’s right-wing Labour."

George Galloway: no longer a leftist • International Socialism George Galloway, running as MP for Rochdale and leader of the Workers’ Party of Britain (WPB), is one of the most high-profile individuals involved in the pro-Palestinian challenge to the Labour Party at the 2024 general election.1 That is why… Continue Reading →

War and resistance—in Palestine and beyond • International Socialism 14/06/2024

In the forthcoming issue of International Socialism, Joseph Choonara describes the unprecedented wave of global solidarity with the Palestinians and how it is interacting with the shifting power dynamics within the regime to erode the Israeli state’s role as a key guarantor of Western interests.

"Our previous issue of International Socialism went to press carrying the banner headline, 'Globalise the Intifada!'. By the time it returned from the printers, student encampments in solidarity with Gaza had sprung up in universities in the United States, a form of protest that would indeed, shortly after, go global."

The new issue of International Socialism is out now, and it focuses on the dynamics of imperialism in the Middle East, with articles on Israel's war with Hezbollah, fossil imperialism, and the anti-colonial politics of Frantz Fanon.

Join us on Friday 10 May for a discussion with Anne Alexander on her article in the new issue, which explores the decline of US imperialism, the development of new military technologies such as drone warfare, and shifts in the political economy of regional rivals such as Israel and Iran.

These factors are driving both the barbarity of the Israeli assault on Gaza and the sharpening of rivalries between regional powers - threatening a much wider war.

This is a chance to discuss a Marxist analysis of the dynamics propelling occupation, war and militarisation in the Middle East - and the huge implications for politics in Britain. The event starts at 6.30pm at Bookmarks Bookshop.

Revisiting the dynamics of imperialism in the Middle East • International Socialism 10/04/2024

Anne Alexander explores the political economy driving inter-imperialist rivalry and sub-imperialism in the Middle East, from the drone warfare competition between Iran and Turkey to the relationship between Israel's high-tech industry and its slaughter in Gaza.

"Beneath everything lies the terrifying feeling that not only is the Middle East tipping towards a period of even more protracted and bitter wars...but that these conflicts risk morphing into another active frontline in the global inter-imperialist conflict that our rulers seem desperate to steer us towards."

Revisiting the dynamics of imperialism in the Middle East • International Socialism More than six months into the greatest crisis to grip the Middle East for a generation, it is sometimes hard to find words that adequately describe its scale and intensity.1 As I write, Israeli troops are poised to invade Rafah… Continue Reading →

Lebanon: Hezbollah faces Israel’s war threat • International Socialism 08/04/2024

Simon Assaf analyses Israel's war drive against Hezbollah in the forthcoming issue of International Socialism: "Lebanon is in the crosshairs of imperialism. Yet, the prospect of the Gaza war spilling over Israel’s northern border is causing unease among Western leaders."

Lebanon: Hezbollah faces Israel’s war threat • International Socialism Lebanon is in the crosshairs of imperialism. Along with Yemen, it is one of the two countries currently engaged in military action to support the Palestinians. Gaza: a politics of carnage and chaos • International Socialism 07/04/2024

In the forthcoming issue of International Socialism, Joseph Choonara explores the growing tensions between the US establishment and Israel, how the Gaza genocide threatens to destabilise US power in the Middle East, and how public opinion across the world is shifting against Israel.

Gaza: a politics of carnage and chaos • International Socialism The next stage in Israel’s brutal war on Gaza hung in the balance as International Socialism went to press.1 Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu had approved plans for a ground offensive against the southernmost Gazan city of Rafah, where 1.5… Continue Reading →

On the evening of 30 July 1920, orderly columns of women workers clad in red kerchiefs and Red Sisters wearing white scarves make their way to the Bolshoi Theatre from remote districts and the outskirts of Moscow.

They are holding banners adorned with slogans: “Long Live Clara Zetkin—Leader of the World Army of Proletarian Women!” and “Through the Dictatorship of the Proletariat in All Countries, Onward to the Complete Emancipation of Women!”

A cartoon from a Conservative Party pamphlet of 1906 shows an employer giving an English workers‘ job to a foreigner who is drawn as a caricature of a Jew.

The Tories have always been a party drenched in antisemitism and racism - and to this day, they give credence to antisemitic political forces worldwide, such as Viktor Orban in Hungary.
