When I first built it, I positioned it too broadly.

The result? People didn’t fully understand what it was for.

Many of my clients feel frustrated because their line manager does not provide the guidance, support and leadership they would like to see.

Your boss might be disorganised, unclear or reluctant to make difficult decisions.

Waiting for them to change rarely work, but it could be time to manage upwards.

It’s one of the most powerful leadership skills

Managing upwards means taking responsibility for the relationship and creating the clarity that might otherwise be missing:

➡️ Get clear on priorities.

➡️ Create structure if things are
chaotic.

➡️ Make decisions easier by presenting options.

➡️ Be explicit about what you can and can’t deliver without input.

When you do this well, two things happen: you reduce your own frustration, and you often become the steady person your boss relies on.

Your boss may not change. But how you work with them can.

Many people stay stuck in jobs they’ve outgrown because they believe they’re “not qualified” to do anything else.

Yes, some professions require formal qualifications that you may not have. But in many roles, what matters just as much is your transferable skills, your motivation and the evidence that you can add value.

Employers aren’t always looking for a perfect CV.

They’re looking for people who can learn, adapt and bring the right attitude.

Skills can often be taught. Attitude can’t.
