A lovely visit today to the South London Botanical Institute in Tulse Hill 🌿
Founded in 1910 by A.O. Hume to bring plant science to local working people, SLBI has spent 115 years quietly becoming one of South London's most distinctive community assets. A Victorian house, a botanical garden, a herbarium of over 100,000 specimens, and a library, all tucked behind iron railings on Norwood Road.
Since reopening in 2024 after a four-year closure, they have welcomed over 2,700 people through free and low-cost programmes. Schools, refugee groups, young adults on paid placements, neighbours coming in for a workshop or a wander through the garden.
A reminder that some of the most meaningful community infrastructure in Lambeth has been there all along. Worth a visit if you have not been.
