World Environment Day is no longer about awareness. It is about action.
Across the worldโand in Ethiopia through the Green Legacy initiative, renewable energy expansion, electric mobility, and preparations for COP32โclimate action is already taking shape in practice.
But it is never confined within borders. The environment connects us all, and what happens in one place shapes outcomes everywhere. That is why cooperation remains essential for protecting a shared future.
Because in the end, there is no โelsewhereโ in the environment we all depend on.

Can African countries achieve economic transformation in a world that is becoming more fragmented and competitive?
In an International Monetary Fund (IMF) article, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, H.E. Gedion Timothewos, argues that geopolitical rivalry is reshaping trade, investment, and access to critical resources, making the global environment very different from the one that supported the rise of many export-led economies.
In this changing environment, he sees stronger intra-African trade, regional cooperation, and strategic partnerships as increasingly important to Africa's future.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali has welcomed the African Union Election Observation Mission following Ethiopiaโs 7th General Election, expressing gratitude for the missionโs role in supporting the countryโs democratic process. Meeting with former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and his team in Addis Ababa, Prime Minister Abiy praised the 73-member observer mission led by Kenyatta, describing African institutions as central to ensuring democratic processes are rooted in regional experience and context. He said Ethiopia appreciated the observersโ efforts across the country and looked forward to their final findings.
In its preliminary assessment, the African Union Election Observation Mission said efforts undertaken to strengthen democracy in Ethiopia were encouraging. Kenyatta stated that the mission found the overall electoral process was conducted in accordance with Ethiopiaโs legal framework and relevant international standards. He noted that observers had engaged extensively with electoral stakeholders from the pre-election period onward and described developments throughout the process as positive.
The mission highlighted several aspects of the election that it said contributed to voter participation and transparency. According to Kenyatta, voter education initiatives helped citizens better understand the voting process, while coordinated election-day preparations created favorable conditions for voters. He also pointed to the use of technology in the electoral process, saying it provided significant opportunities, particularly for young people, to engage in democratic participation.
Kenyatta further noted that extended voting hours gave additional opportunities for citizens to cast their ballots, while measures prioritizing persons with disabilities and elderly voters helped broaden participation. He commended election officials, security personnel and media organizations for carrying out their responsibilities professionally, and praised Ethiopian voters for what he described as their strong commitment to fulfilling their civic duty during the election.
Meanwhile, the Delegation of the European Union to Ethiopia, together with the diplomatic missions of 22 EU member states and the embassies of Canada, Norway and Switzerland, welcomed the holding of Ethiopiaโs 7th General Election on 1 June 2026. The joint statement commended the efforts of the National Election Board of Ethiopia, election workers, political parties, candidates and civil society organizations, while recognizing the role of the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) as international observers and expressing anticipation for their forthcoming reports.
