New To***co and Va**ng Law

Central government has announced new measures to tackle the sale of illegal to***co and vapes

From 29 October 2026, selling vapes or ni****ne products to anyone under 18 will be an offence, with a £200 fixed penalty notice or possible prosecution. It will also be an offence for an adult to buy these products on behalf of someone under 18. Trading Standards will have ever so very slightly better enforcement measures to tackle illegal sales.

My opinion ... Do I think it's enough? Absolutely not. Central government think this is some kind of deterrent, but in my opinion, it's a token gesture and it's not enough. The fines should be much bigger, and any shop caught selling illegal to***co or vapes should be closed permanently. Shop owners who knowingly sell these illegal products should face a custodial sentence. MPs who are not lobbying for the laws to be stronger are letting residents down

That said, let's still report it when we see it to the police and trading standards and name and shame Long Eaton shops who break the law

Leicester Street Road Resurfacing – Update

FFS indeed!

Unfortunately, I have to share a disappointing update regarding the resurfacing works on Leicester Street.

Despite plenty of prior notification advising residents not to park on the road during the works, a vehicle was left obstructing the excavation, meaning the contractors were unable to continue as planned.

As a result, the workers had no choice but to make the road safe by temporarily filling in the excavated section. This means additional work will now be needed to complete the resurfacing properly.

This is incredibly frustrating for residents who have been waiting for these improvements, and I fully understand the disappointment and inconvenience this causes.

It has also resulted in additional costs to the Council. Money that could otherwise have been spent on resurfacing other roads, repairing damaged surfaces and tackling potholes has now had to be used to deal with this avoidable situation.

Please, when advance notice is given about roadworks, make every effort to move vehicles and follow the parking restrictions. These arrangements are there for a reason: to allow contractors to complete the work safely, efficiently and with the least possible disruption.

Thank you to the residents who have cooperated and continue to be patient. It's disappointing when the actions of one person can affect an entire street and waste valuable public money.

Petersham Road update

update on the planned resurfacing of Petersham Road - Long Eaton North

The work was originally scheduled to take place this October, but I’ve now been informed that it has been pushed back, with resurfacing due to start on 23 November.

Following a drainage survey, it was identified that some repairs were needed to the drainage system. Unfortunately, these works couldn’t have been anticipated before the original resurfacing date was planned, so they need to be completed before the road can be resurfaced.

I’ve also received apologies from officers for not keeping councillors informed of the delay and I appreciate that residents will want to know what’s happening and when.

Owen and myself will continue to keep an eye on this and share any further updates as they become available.

Our Pothole Stats from DCC under Reform

Over the last six months, we’ve repaired 39,721 potholes... around 13,000 more than were actually reported to us!

So, how have we done it? Over the past year, we’ve introduced an active approach to pothole repairs. When our road repair teams attend to a reported pothole, they are now also look around the surrounding area to identify other potholes that need attention and fix them

Now this doesn't always mean they'll repair every pothole along a street in one visit, because they might not have enough available materials, staff or time but they’re fixing what they can while they’re there.

This means we’re identifying and repairing more potholes than are being reported to us... helping us get ahead of the problem rather than simply reacting to individual reports.

It’s also been an important part of tackling the huge backlog of potholes we inherited when we took over in May 2025

39,721 potholes repaired in six months... and we’re continuing to work hard to improve our roads.

Getting Roads Ready for Winter

This last year weve made huge progress in clearing the pothole backlog and reducing potholes on our roads, we’re now able to focus more of our efforts on proactive maintenance to prevent defects from forming in the first place.

Winter is a hard time for our roads because of rain, freezing and ice making deterioration and creating new potholes worse. Because we cleared a massive backlog and have resurfaced some of the worse roads. ... we can now get ahead of the winter problem by using preventative treatments liked targeted machine patching, jet patching, elastomatic patching and joint treatments.

The hot weather we experienced this summer caused increased cracking on some road surfaces due to expansion and contraction. Treating these cracks and joints now will help stop water from getting in, and protecting the road surface from further damage over the winter months.

VOTER ID CHANGES ??

Ive seen news report that say Andy Burnham is pushing to allow UK issued bank cards , without a photograph, to be used as voter ID at polling stations.

Is he planning ahead for a general election or early general election, is it going to be in place for Long Eaton/ Erewash local election in May next year?

The Electoral Commission has already raised concerns that this would make it harder to verify a voter’s identity and 1 person could potentially vote several times if they used bank cards belonging to others. Fake bank cards are easily made. Why not bank cards, plus proof of address and a polling card?

What are your thoughts on this proposed change? How do the people of Long Eaton feel about it? Could this be another way for allowing cheating at elections?

And why now?

Trafalgar Square, Long Eaton ... a Privately owned road

I have had to address this issue with residents many times.

During previous elections, residents tell me that the current MP promised to get this road fixed, and that previous Labour and Conservative borough councillors also promised to get it done. They lied!

Let me explain the facts.

Trafalgar Square is privately owned road, responsibility for its maintenance, its not part of the council's highway network.

There are an estimated 40,000 private or unadopted roads in England and Wales and Derbyshire County Council has one of the biggest road network and highways to maintain already, for which we're already massively underfunded for, and just had hundreds of millions chopped by Labour.

Trafalgar Square is not a case of filling a few potholes. The road is severely deteriorated. Excavation, rebuilding the foundations, new tarmac, kerbs, pavements and a complete drainage replacement could easily turn this into a project costing in excess £250,000 potentially

Now imagine DCC agreeing to fund the reconstruction of one privately owned road? It sets the precedence and flood gates would open, and run into 100s of millions. government estimate the cost of bringing all unadopted roads up to an adoptable standard at around £4 billion, that was a few years ago ... it's way more now

I won't ever lie to you to get votes, if you were told by the MP when he was canvassing, that he would fix it then he either lied or had no clue what he was talking about... either option was dangerous and apart from that. he's got nothing to do with Derbyshire county council, zero authority over DCC and can do no more to request a road repair than residents. Despite what he claims to do. DCC fix the roads,.. simple. It's got nothing to do with an MP

If, during the next election in May, or next general election, any candidate knocks on your door saying they'll fix the road ... needs the door shutting on them!

I may not tell you what you want to hear, but you can guarantee it will be the truth and not false promises. I wish I could wave a magic wand and repair the road, but I can't

Residents deserve honesty, not election promises that will never be delivered.

Finances Feeling Stronger - under Reform administration

£700 MILLION GROWTH IN THE DERBYSHIRE PENSION FUND?

The Derbyshire Pension Fund is now worth around £7.73 billion, up from around £7.03 billion a year ago.

That's an increase of around £700 million in just 12 months.

This was announced in Wednesdays full council meeting, but didn't make the press of course ... FFS 🤷

The latest valuation puts the Fund at 135% funded, giving it a very strong financial position. This strength can help to lower employer pension contributions and reduce the pressure on councils and other employers.

This could mean 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗮𝘅 𝗽𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿

Since Reform took control of Derbyshire County Council in May 2025. .. this is what responsible council stewardship looks like ... Reform are managing public money and delivering better value for Derbyshire.

£700 million of growth ... A Fund in a strong financial position ... vote Reform, get Reform!

This means affected employees, which could include some school staff, community care workers, council employees and more.could be benefit from reduced pressure on their employers finances under Reform administration

Yesterday I couldn't hold back my tears and my anger. I detest this current government

For once, the parties were in agreement ( apart from Labour, who sat silent)

From 31 October, Labour is removing your voice, and councillors, regarding planning decisions throughout England

The Government’s new National Scheme of Delegation means councils across England are being required to follow nationally prescribed rules about who makes planning decisions ... and your wishes and my wishes will be irrelevant.

Oh you'll be able to voice how you feel about a development in your back garden, but you won't be able to change it or stop it. You can have a pointless voice ... but not You nor councillors will get a vote. The number of objections will no longer automatically send an application to Planning Committee.

No longer can you and councillors vote on it, never again can we force it before a Planning Committee, and neither you or i can ever appeal again. YOU NO LONGER GET A SAY

Your elected councillors cant speak up on your behalf either. Labour have made sure WE NO LONGER HAVE A SAY ON YOUR BEHALF

The Government says this is about speeding up planning, reducing uncertainty and cutting red tape. That is the Government's stated justification, it's BS, it's about central control and nothing more

And we, as councillors, can't fight it. They've made sure that we'll be breaking the law if we don't comply

So who can you, as residents appeal to ? The MPs ofcourse. They are the ones who decide what is enforced in government. They are the ones who can challenge government ... and whilst these calcium deficient Labour MPs love taking to their social media like they're local celebrities, not one of these spine deficient individuals has spoken about it, or spoken against it or informed you that you no longer have a choice

Infact, our local MP who has previously claimed false glory over certain planning issues ... now ... all of a sudden ... is saying "I don't get involved in local planning" . How utterly convenient and wet of him

I'm angry, we're all angry and my anger manifested itself in tears during yesterday's council meeting. It utterly broke my heart that you, me, all of us are having our rights and voice taken away piece by piece.

I can not wait to see you Labour spineless, self serving MPs gone! Reform will undo this
