in 1941 it was too! This amazing photo shows the swede harvest in Maes Davy field at Pant-Y-Ochain Farm, Gresford near Wrexham.
Photo shows Bill Roberts , J.E.Jones "Old Freddie" of Pant-Y-Ochain farm, Gresford, Arthur Jones and Eileen Murgatroyd of the Women's Land Army. Horses shown are Bell and Lofty.
When you hear about loss of soil productivity in recent years I think this is what is meant - just look at the size of the swedes in this image- about the size of a football! And just two horses to harvest the whole field.

This we are looking at the Common Tern, a although these sleek and graceful birds are definitely seabirds they also travel quite far inland and can be found in large groups around gravel pits, lakes and reservoirs. Common Tern also migrate really long distances seeking warmth in winter. They can travel all the way from our shores down to the southern tip of Africa! What amazing creatures!

This cute little barrel was an essential part of harvest time for agricultural workers in previous centuries. It is called a costrel and was used by agricultural workers to carry c***r into the fields where they were working. At that time water was not necessarily safe to drink and the hard physical labour of the harvest required hydration, so carrying a small barrel of c***r with you was the safest way to quench your thirst! This dinky wooden barrel is certainly more sustainably made than the plastic water bottles many use today.

At this time of year you might be lucky enough to spot a flock of Goldfinches seeking out seeds to feast upon in preparation for winter. These stunning and colourful birds certainly stand out from the crowd with their jazzy yellow, red and black colourings. Did you know that a group of Goldfinches is known as a charm?! A very appropriate name I think- they certainly do looking charming :)

in the late Eighteenth century this finger bowl was created at the Caughley porcelain works for washing your fingers at the table whilst eating. The pattern is the Apple and Damson design which showcases another traditional Shropshire product, Shropshire damsons!
Have you spotted any laden trees in an orchard near you? Or have you made the most of this seasons harvest by making something delicious? I spotted some very heavily laden damson trees but they had fruited very early- probably due to the abnormally hot summer we have had.
