What Iโm holding in my hand is a PWR uranium fuel pellet. The energy from just two pellets can provide a UK household with electricity for an entire year.
And where is the fuel for our nuclear industry manufactured? ๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ป๐ด๐ณ๐ถ๐ฒ๐น๐ฑ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ถ๐๐ฒ๐ฑ, right here in Salwick, within my division of Fylde East.
We have a nuclear industry on our doorstep, bringing skilled jobs, investment and opportunities to our local area. Yet we are seeing proposals for vast cable corridors and solar farms that threaten our valuable agricultural land and the beautiful green fields that make Fylde special.
๐ฑ ๐ช๐ ๐ก๐๐๐ ๐ง๐ข ๐ฃ๐ฅ๐ข๐ง๐๐๐ง ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐จ๐ก๐ง๐ฅ๐ฌ๐ฆ๐๐๐ ๐ช๐๐๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐๐จ๐ฅ๐๐ก๐ ๐ข๐จ๐ฅ ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ๐๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ง๐จ๐ฅ๐.
โข๏ธ Nuclear power offers a reliable, low-carbon source of electricity, requiring relatively little land compared with many other forms of energy generation. It also provides an opportunity to support skilled employment and investment right here in Lancashire.
Rather than sacrificing more of our productive farmland, we should be making the most of the nuclear expertise, infrastructure and skills we already have on our doorstep.
