💚 September 💚

Now that we are closed for the season and we’ve had a little chance to rest, we want to say some huge thank yous.
⭐️Thank you to everyone who has visited Woldies this season, it’s a privilege to be part of families spending quality time together in nature.
⭐️Thank you to our amazing members who continue to support what we are building and embrace Woldies as a special place to them. You make it special for our family too 💚
⭐️ Thank you to our incredible Woldies team, as a small family business we couldn’t do this without you.
⭐️ Thank you to our friends and family, we appreciate your support and hands on help in and behind the scenes.
⭐️ Thank you to the amazing local suppliers and organisations that we work with, many who are small local family businesses like us.

There’s lots of jobs to be done in September and October before the weather turns colder and so much to be grateful for. Here’s a little taste of September at Woldies:
☀️ Beautiful sunshine and sunsets
🌸 Bulbs, bulbs and more bulbs
🦆 Bird rescue (and days talking to the ducks)
🐝 Huge Bumblebees feasting on late season nectar
🚜 Grass seeding and maintenance
🦉 Tidying up and repairs
🛝 Lots of planning time….exciting!
💚 Catching up on family days together

🏆 And finally some exciting news… we are finalists for a Visit Hull and East Yorkshire REYTA Award for Remarkable Visitor Attraction of the Year!

The award night is in November keep your fingers crossed! 🏆

Did you know that not all sunflower seeds produce pollen? In fact many species for cutting and flower arranging are specially bred not to produce pollen. This can mean they don’t produce seeds either.

Our bird, butterfly and bee gardens are packed full of wildlife friendly plants. Get up close and experience the magic of exploring nature together. Plus be inspired to help wildlife at home.

What we plant and how we manage our outside spaces can make a huge difference to wildlife.
Some of our favourite wildlife friendly plants (that manage to grow on our very sandy, dry soil!):
🪻Lavender (of course)
🌻Sunflowers (check they produce pollen)
🌸Echinacea purpurea (coneflower)
🪻Aster (Michaelmas daisies)
🌻Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan)
🪻Nepeta (catmint)
🌼Don’t forget spring bulbs and blossom to provide a spread of food and shelter throughout the year - our spring bulbs arrived today - we are ready to get planting for Easter 2027!

🚜 Our lavender harvest is happening this week 🪻

Select days from Wednesday 2nd to Sunday 6th September (depending on the weather)

How does it work?
🪻 The lavender we grow here at Woldies is cut and collected either by hand or with our specially adapted harvester
🪻We use the train tracks to transport the cut flowers to the still
🪻The flowers and stems are loaded into the still by hand
🪻The wood fire is used to heat water in the giant kettle to produce steam, the steam is then fed through the lavender which breaks it down to release the oil
🪻The steam containing the oil is passed through the condenser - this uses cold water from our ponds (not mixed in don’t worry!) to cool it back down to water
🪻The oil and lavender water are then separated and filtered
🪻The ‘spent’ lavender is used as a mulch on our trees and hedges to retain water, provide nutrients and homes for insects

🪻All our Woldies own Wolds Way Lavender products contain our oil -grown, harvested and distilled here on site. We bottle and label our products here ready to sell in our gift shop and online.

When it’s a family business there’s always a job to do, this is by far the kids favourite!

The frogs have been loving the recent rain, we didn’t put their ramp in the train turntable last night so a rescue mission was needed this morning! You heard it here first…frog spawn next spring 🐸

☀️ The forecast is dry here during the day over the bank holiday and there’s just one week left to visit this year. ☀️
