Manchester Green Party is saddened to learn of the death of Labour Councillor Pat Karney, who passed away at the age of 78.

Cllr Karney served the city of Manchester for almost half a century, having represented Harpurhey ward on Manchester City Council since 1979.

Cllr Astrid Johnson, leader of the Green Party on Manchester City Council, said: "Cllr Karney was an influential, larger-than-life figure and a dedicated servant to Manchester for almost half a century, as well as a passionate supporter of LGBTIQA+ rights.

"Pat was a respected Labour colleague, and I had many spirited exchanges with him at council and committee meetings, often in good humour. Several Greens, including myself, sat alongside him on the Health Scrutiny Committee and saw how deeply he cared about Manchester and its residents.

"While Pat was often our opponent in public, in private we had many kind conversations with him and learnt much about the history of Manchester City Council, a history he has undoubtedly played a large part in.

"Pat will be missed by those who knew him, and we send our sincere condolences to his family, his friends and his colleagues across Manchester City Council and beyond."
