Tom, a clever chap who has made some great pieces for the reef posted this message on our Ravelry group. I asked if it was alright to share it with you as it explains why the hyperbolic corals can sometimes take a while! :

" Talking about math, crochet & coral, I came to a nice realisation yesterday while crocheting a hyperbolic moebius, going 2 dc in each dc… In this particular configuration, i.e. doubling at every stitch, you shall end up after i rows, provided you started with n stitches, with i x (2^(n+1) - 2) stitches. This means, e.g., that if starting with 25 stitches, after 5 rows you have 25 x (2^6 - 2) = 25 x 62 = 1550 stitches. And just for your information, the next row will see you that many stitches again (+2), so that in conclusion: the following row is always as long as the whole project up to now! Make sure to think about that one when it comes to whether you should get that extra row…

P.S.: the proof to the formula above is a very funny recursive proof, if anyone is interested, or to distract kids in a math classroom!"

Hi folks. We have a meet up and workshop at the Manchester Museum this Sunday. Please come along! It'll run from 1-4 and will be an opportunity to learn how to crochet, be inspired by the contributions that have already come in and show off your work! Hope to see you there!

Next week we'll be building the reef structure that will be the base for our coral to be attached to. It would be great if we could have as much coral as possible in place for the opening of the exhibition on the 28th. All contributors will be invited to attend the private view which will be hosted by historian and broadcaster Michael Wood. I'll post more info about the opening nearer the time but until then please post or dropped off any contributions at the Manchester Museum c/o Wendy Gallagher. We will of course be adding to the reef throughout the duration of the exhibition so keep crocheting!
