The Respect Party

Anti-imperialism, anti-racism, progressive politics - peace, justice and equality The Respect Party is opposed to war, privatization and unemployment.

We started in 2004 after Tony Blair’s Labour government ignored the millions of the anti-war movement and took us into three wars, in Serbia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Now the three main parties all agree to another appalling war in Libya – have they learned anything? The politicians are not serving the people and we are trying to create a new type of party that works in our communities and for our co

mmunities. None of those main parties represent the interests of ordinary working-class people or those who want a fairer, more equal and just society. When workers and communities take strike action or protest against privatization, job losses and cuts to our services, they are criticized by the main parties while we support them. It stands for peace, publicly owned services and a decent future for all. We want a world in which the democratic demands of the people are carried out; a world based on need not profit; a world where solidarity rather than self-interest is the spirit of the age. We want to reach out to all those who share our views, to build a new party for change in the interests of ordinary people. Some Election Success

In the 2005 general election Respect got impressive results. We were able to win results in a clutch of inner-city working class constituencies which no other left party had achieved for a very long time. Expelled Labour MP George Galloway stood for Respect in the east London constituency of Bethnal Green and Bow and overturned a 10,000 majority held by the New Labour pro-war MP Oona King. In Sparkbrook and Small Heath in Birmingham Salma Yaqoob won 27.5 percent of the vote - only 3,000 votes short of winning the seat. Respect has continued to achieve good election results but with the difficulties faced by all smaller parties in 2010. In December 2010, Respect won a council seat in Banglatown and Spitalfields ward, Tower Hamlets against Labour. Opposing the hatemongers
Launching wars against the Muslim world has led to blaming Muslims everywhere, even in Britain. Respect is against this scaremongering. Muslims contribute enormously to our society and our communities and we believe that everyone should stand together against the attempt to destroy our services and drown our world in war.
