2026 marks the centenary of the sale of Wythenshawe Hall to Ernest, 1st Baron Simon of Wythenshawe and former Lord Mayor of Manchester, and his wife, Lady Shena, who immediately gifted it to Manchester Corporation โto be used solely for the public goodโ. Prior to the sale, the estate had been in the possession of the Tatton family for almost 400 years.
We will be welcoming volunteers from the Friends of Wythenshawe Hall who are going to tell us more about Wythenshawe Hall, its history and its restoration.
Ernest Simonโs mother, Emily Stoehr, grew up in Alderley Edge. The family lived at The Larches on Woodbrook Road and her marriage to Gustavus Henry Victor Hermann Amandus Simon took place at St Philipโs so our venue for this evening is very fitting. Ernestโs uncle, Charles William Stoehr, lived at Croston Towers after his marriage which took place at St Maryโs, Nether Alderley.
Entrance is free for AHG members, guests are very welcome [ยฃ5.00 per person]. If you are unable to attend and would like to join by Zoom, please message Mandy Parr for the link.
Hopefully later this year we will be able to arrange a guided tour of the Hall for AHG members.

Another fantastic update from our neighbours at Baguley. We can't wait to see the next steps for the wonderful Baguley Hall.
Our Chief Executive Michael Guy and some of our trustees welcomed The Architectural Heritage Fund to Baguley Hall recently.
The Fund has awarded ยฃ79,000 to Heritage Trust North West to be used to appoint a specialist professional team to lead the next phase of the Baguley Hall project.
Michael Guy, Chief Executive of HTNW, said: โWe are delighted to receive this funding, which enables us to assemble a dedicated project team for this exciting restoration.
โIt brings vital expertise to complement our in-house skills and allows us to begin developing proposals that will mark a new chapter for Baguley Hall.โ
Matthew McKeague, Chief Executive of the Architectural Heritage Fund, added: โBaguley Hall is a unique and rare survivor with a rich and fascinating history. We are pleased to support Heritage Trust North West in bringing this important building back into use and creating a new purpose for the local community.โ
