More than 300 local people will take to the Riverside Stadium pitch tomorrow for a major mass dance performance celebrating Middlesbrough Football Club’s 150th anniversary.

The dancers are aged from six to 79 and come from local schools, colleges, community groups, youth groups and dance schools across Teesside.

They will perform at 12.15pm, just ahead of kick-off in Boro's home game against Cardiff City, as part of a performance produced by TeesDance and funded by Arts Council England.

Many of those performing would not describe themselves as dancers and, for some, this will be their first experience of being involved in live event.

Together, they will perform in front of a bumper Riverside crowd of up to 30,000 and participate in one of the most significant moments in MFC’s history.

The project uses dance and original music to celebrate the people and stories of Teesside and the extraordinary changes the area has experienced over the 150 years since the club was founded in 1876 – from its industrial heritage to the place it is today.

At the heart of the performance is an original score composed by Tom Powell, a professional musician, lifelong Middlesbrough supporter and former season ticket holder who first developed his musical skills as a student with Tees Valley Music Service and now works for the service.

The dancers all took part in a dress rehearsal at the Riverside last week. Make sure you get to your seats early tomorrow, Boro fans!

🩷 When Judi discovered a lump in her breast, she didn’t hesitate - she made an appointment with her GP straight away. That decision saved her life.

“Over the years, I’ve found quite a few lumps in my breasts. I found a lump and I thought ‘Here we go again…’ but I made an appointment anyway.”

She remembers apologising to the nurse for wasting her time. The nurse replied: “We would rather check you a hundred times and it be nothing than never check you and find out it’s something too late down the line.”

Judi’s story is a powerful reminder that knowing your body and acting quickly can make all the difference. She trusted her instincts and called the doctors.

Judi also advocates for men to check themselves and she’s determined to break the stigma and raise awareness for everyone: “If you’re putting off going to the doctors because you’ve noticed a lump or a change in the appearance of your breast (whether you’re a man or a woman!) I would say go and get it checked.”

If you’re putting off going to the doctors, Judi’s advice is this: “Catching it early is so important. And, for me, because I found a lump and caught it early, I was very, very lucky to not need the full suite of treatment and I’ve been able to recover quickly.”

Four areas of Middlesbrough have been identified for extra attention as part of a major new drive to improve the life chances of all residents.

Middlesbrough Mayor Chris Cooke has pushed for the projects in specific parts of Gresham, Hemlington, Pallister Park and Saltersgill.

The target areas – made up of a small number of streets – were chosen using government data.

People living in the areas were then asked for their views on what needed to happen.

Examples of projects being developed include extra activities for young people, a fight back against the nuisance of off-road bikes and new training programmes to help people into work. Residents could also be rewarded for getting involved in community projects.

The four areas – one in each of the Council’s four North, East, South and West neighbourhoods – will receive £150,000 per year of specific funding.

On top of the £150,000 funding, the Council will also consider what other grant funding can be used in the areas.

The projects in the four areas complement work being done townwide on increasing the number of youth clubs.

Eleven brand-new clubs or activities will launch thanks to a £240,000 investment to ensure more parts of the town have youth services.

And efforts to help people into work have recently been boosted by the opening of the Council’s Employment and Skills Hub in the Cleveland Centre.

“Put your phone away and give your child your time to talk together.”

This is the strong message which Middlesbrough mum Sumaira would give to other parents after taking part in the Let’s Talk workshops at her local Family Hub.

The Let’s Talk programme gives parents practical ideas and tips to help their child’s language and speech. Each session is delivered by an expert Early Years and Family Hubs staff member.

Sumaira took part in the sessions to support her young son, Ebaad’s speech.

Reflecting on the benefits of Let’s Talk, she said: “At first, I thought the sessions wouldn’t help, and that Ebaad would just talk in his own time, but I have found that the more I do with him, the more it helps him.

“Ebaad’s behaviour is much better because we are having regular family time playing together.

“Go ahead and give it a try – don’t think that it won’t work because it will!”

Parents of eligible two-year-olds can take part in the Let’s Talk programme.

If you are worried about your child’s speech or have a question, get in touch with your local Family Hub on 01642 579120 or email [email protected]
