Why is it okay to say no to a fostering match? 💛
Finding the right match is one of the most important parts of fostering. It’s not simply about having space in your home. It’s about making sure a child’s individual needs, your experience, your family circumstances and what you feel able to offer all work well together.
And sometimes, that means saying no.
It can be difficult to turn down a potential match, especially when you know a child needs a home. But saying yes when you don’t feel able to meet their needs could lead to challenges further down the line, including a placement breakdown. For a child who may have already experienced trauma, loss or previous placement moves, another disruption can have a significant impact on their sense of security, trust and belonging.
There are lots of valid reasons why a match might not be right. The child may be outside the age range you feel confident supporting, their needs may require specialist experience, there could be safety considerations for other children in your home, or you may simply need some time between placements to rest and recharge.
That’s why good matching matters.
At Fosterplus, the matching process considers compatibility, individual needs and the dynamics of your household, with foster parents able to ask questions and understand a child’s needs before making a decision.
Because when the match is right, it can give a child the stability, security, love and sense of belonging they need to thrive. 🏡💛
And remember, saying no to the wrong match doesn’t make you a bad foster parent. Sometimes, it’s the decision that’s in everyone’s best interests.
