*Today is World Meningitis Day. What do you need to know?*

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord. It can develop quickly and can make people seriously ill.

Here are some of the symptoms to look out for:
• high temperature
• severe or worsening headache
• stiff neck
• dislike of bright lights
• vomiting
• confusion
• being very sleepy or difficult to wake
• a rash that does not fade when a glass is rolled over it

Babies and children under 5 may also feed less, have a high-pitched cry, be floppy or unresponsive, or have a bulging soft spot on the top of their head.

Not everyone with meningitis gets a rash. If you think you or someone else could have meningitis, call 999 or go to A&E immediately.
