🌊 One of our own in the spotlight! 🌊

We’re delighted to see our very own volunteer crew member, Mari, featured in today’s Sunday Post! 📰⚓

Mari has shared her story of volunteering with Montrose RNLI, including how she overcomes seasickness to continue doing something she loves - helping others and giving back to her local community.

Despite the challenges, Mari’s dedication, determination and commitment to the crew shine through.

We’re incredibly proud to have Mari as part of our crew here at Montrose Lifeboat Station, and it’s fantastic to see her story being shared.

👏🏼 Well done, Mari - a brilliant feature and very well deserved!

⛈️ As the first named storms of the season head towards the UK, it's a great time to enjoy the power of nature and the beauty of our coastline... from a distance!

🌊 We know how spectacular the sea can look during stormy weather, and it's something many of us are drawn to watch. Be aware that powerful waves can travel much further than expected, and sea spray, strong winds and slippery surfaces can catch people off guard, even when standing well back from the water's edge.

🐶 If you are planning a coastal walk over the coming days, please take a moment to check the forecast and tide times and keep away from exposed areas. Remember to not turn your back on the sea, and keep any dogs and children close by.

💙 Most importantly, look out for each other and help us share the message that no photo or viewpoint is worth taking unnecessary risks for. We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful coastline and return home safely afterwards!

🛟 If you get in to difficulty in the water, FLOAT to live.
🛟 If you see someone in difficulty, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

📸 Role Spotlight - Lifeboat Press Officer 📸

As part of our role spotlight series, we're continuing to introduce some of the people who help make up the team at Montrose RNLI and highlight the important roles they carry out both on and off the water.
This week, we're taking a closer look at the role of the Lifeboat Press Officer (LPO).

💡 Did you know that behind the stories, photographs and updates you see from your local lifeboat station is a volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer?

At the heart of the role is protecting and promoting the lifeboat station and keeping our local community and supporters connected with what we do. From lifeboat launches and training to volunteer achievements, events and everyday station life, the LPO shares the work of Montrose RNLI.

Storytelling is a big part of the role - finding the moments worth sharing, shining a spotlight on our volunteers and bringing our work to life through photo and video. The LPO also uses their writing skills to produce press releases and share our stories with the media, as well as getting involved in wider RNLI campaigns. This can include working with RNLI teams on content for Saving Lives at Sea, helping some of our stories reach an even wider audience. 📝📸

But knowing what not to share is just as important. Protecting the privacy, identity and dignity of casualties is a key part of the LPO’s work. Each launch is considered carefully - deciding what can appropriately be shared and recognising when a launch is too sensitive to share.

Today we're featuring Sally, our volunteer Lifeboat Press Officer, who is pictured alongside this post. 📸 As well as helping tell the stories of Montrose RNLI, Sally is also a member of our lifeboat crew.

We asked Sally what she enjoys most about the role:
💬 "I love shining a spotlight on our volunteers and the incredible work they do. There are so many people behind Montrose RNLI who quietly give their time, often dropping everything when the pager sounds. It’s a privilege to be trusted to tell their stories and to show the people behind the lifeboats - their personalities, their dedication and the friendships that make our station what it is. I’m really proud to be part of the crew and to give our volunteers the recognition they so thoroughly deserve."

👏🏼 A huge thank you to Sally for helping protect and promote Montrose RNLI and keeping our local community and supporters connected with the people behind our lifeboat station.

👀 Keep an eye on our page as we continue our role spotlight series and introduce more of the people behind Montrose RNLI.

📟 Jody gets her pager 📟

Today, our trainee Jody, who has only recently joined the crew at Montrose RNLI, received her RNLI pager - officially marking the start of her journey as an operational crew member. Jody will be serving on both our Shannon and D-class lifeboats.

Although Jody is yet to attend her first shout with us, she's no stranger to callouts. Prior to joining Montrose RNLI, Jody spent two years with HM Coastguard, attending callouts around our coastline. 👏🏼

Congratulations on becoming an operational crew member, Jody! We look forward to having you out on service with us. 🛟🌊

Launch ILB

RNLI Montrose inshore lifeboat ‘Margaret Olive’ was tasked by HM Coastguard this morning to reports of a boat adrift in Montrose Basin.

Our ILB crew launched and made best speed to the vessel. The boat was fully adrift, the helm assessed the situation and decided that a tow was the safest option to prevent the boat from drifting further towards the bridges or harbour area. A towline was established and the vessel was safely towed a short distance to back to its mooring, where the owner was in attendance and re-secured their boat.

The lifeboat then returned to station where it was washed down and made ready for service.

💙 RNLI Montrose mourns the loss of Richard ‘Ric’ Cobb 💙

It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our dear friend and former Launch Authority, Richard ‘Ric’ Cobb.

Ric was a much loved and highly respected member of our lifeboat family, whose dedication and commitment to saving lives at sea spanned more than four decades.

Having first joined Montrose Lifeboat Station in 1984, Ric served in a number of roles, including lifeboat crew, Second Mechanic and latterly Launch Authority. Throughout his years of service, his experience, calm judgement and unwavering commitment earned him the respect and friendship of generations of volunteers.

Only earlier this year, we had the privilege of recognising Ric's remarkable contribution to the RNLI as he stepped into his well earned retirement. It makes his passing all the more difficult to comprehend.

As a station, we are deeply saddened and devastated by his loss. Ric was an important part of the fabric of Montrose Lifeboat Station, and his absence will be felt by everyone who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him. He leaves behind not only an extraordinary legacy of service, but many treasured memories and friendships.

At this incredibly difficult time, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Ric's wife Lesley, his son David, his daughters Erin and Amy, their partners, all his grandchildren and the wider family. We hope they can take some comfort in knowing how highly regarded Ric was and how much he meant to our station.

Ric's contribution to the RNLI and the Montrose community will always be remembered with immense gratitude, pride and affection.

He will be greatly missed by his entire lifeboat family at RNLI Montrose.

Fair winds and following seas 💙⚓

⚙️ A different of Saturday morning at Montrose RNLI 🛠️

No Saturday morning exercise today, but there was still plenty of learning going on down at the station.

Our trainee ALB mechanics, Jake and Matt, spent the morning getting some hands-on experience in the engine room of our Shannon class lifeboat, learning how to change the gearbox oil and replace the fuel filters, under the guidance of the gaffer himself, Scott, our full-time Coxswain!

👏🏼 A big well done to Jake, who's making great progress through his ALB mechanic training plan, and to Matt, who's recently started his own journey towards becoming an ALB mechanic.

🩹 Role Spotlight - Casualty Carer 🚤

As part of our role spotlight series, we're continuing to introduce some of the people who help make up the team at Montrose RNLI and highlight the important roles they carry out on our lifeboats.

This week, we're taking a closer look at the role of the casualty carer.

When someone needs the RNLI, they may be injured, unwell, exhausted, cold or experiencing one of the worst days of their life. Casualty Carers play a vital role in providing care, reassurance and support until the casualty can be transferred to further medical assistance.

The RNLI provides casualty carers with an intensive 3 day casualty care course, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to deal with a wide range of medical emergencies. Training covers areas such as patient assessment, CPR, oxygen therapy, the use of defibrillators, managing bleeding and trauma injuries, treating hypothermia, medical episodes, caring for unconscious casualties and effective casualty monitoring.

These skills allow casualty carers to provide a high level of pre-hospital care in what can often be challenging environments at sea, helping to ensure casualties receive the best possible care until they can be handed over to ambulance crews 🚑 .

Today we're featuring Kai, one of our volunteer Helms who is also trained as a casualty carer, who is pictured alongside this post. 📸

We asked Kai what they enjoy most about the role:
💬 "I enjoy knowing that the training we receive can make a real difference to someone when they need help most. The casualty care training is incredibly rewarding and gives you the confidence to deal with a range of situations. Being able to provide care and reassurance to people during what can often be a frightening experience is one of the most rewarding parts of being on the crew."

👏🏼 A huge thank you to Kai and all of our volunteer casualty carers who dedicate their time to developing and maintaining these important skills, helping us provide lifesaving care whenever and wherever it's needed.

And just like that… she’s off! 👋🏼

Yesterday, we said farewell to RNLB Brianne Aldington (13-21) as she left Montrose Lifeboat Station to continue her journey north to Wick.

RNLB Brianne Aldington arrived with us back in March, providing relief cover while our boat Ian Grant Smith was away for maintenance - and she’s been kept busy during her time at Montrose!

She’s responded to several service calls with our volunteer crew and taken part in countless training exercises over the past few months. We were even lucky enough on a few occasions to have 2 Shannon-class lifeboats together for exercises - lucky us!

She’s become a familiar sight around Montrose Harbour, but another lifeboat station needs her now, so it’s time for Brianne Aldington to move on and do what relief lifeboats do best - keeping another stretch of coastline safely covered and ready to respond.

Wishing the relief crew a safe passage north to Wick, and we’re sure Brianne Aldington will serve them just as well as she has us. 🌊
