🌧️⚠️ STORM BOELO – POWER CUTS & WEATHER UPDATE

As Storm Boelo continues to affect our region, I’m keeping a close eye on the situation locally and staying in touch as the impact of the strong winds and heavy rain becomes clearer.

Northern Powergrid has warned that damage to the electricity network is possible, with further disruption and power cuts potentially occurring as conditions develop.

If you experience a power cut, please make sure you report it directly to Northern Powergrid. This helps them identify problems, prioritise their response and keep residents updated.

⚡ Report and track power cuts:

📞 Call 105 if you’re unable to get online.

A few important reminders:

🔹 Use torches rather than candles where possible.

🔹 Keep fridge and freezer doors closed during power cuts.

🔹 Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours, friends and relatives where it’s safe to do so.

🔹 Stay well clear of fallen power lines or damaged electrical equipment and report them immediately on 105 or 999 if there’s an immediate danger.

Those who may need additional support can register for Northern Powergrid’s free Priority Services Membership:

I’ll continue to monitor the situation, keep in touch and share any important updates affecting our local communities.

Please do report any issues through the proper channels rather than assuming someone else has already done so.

Above all, stay safe, look out for one another and take care if you’re heading out today.

⏰🍂 Just a friendly reminder that the clocks go back one hour tonight!

At 2am, the clocks go back to 1am as British Summer Time comes to an end.

An extra hour in bed for most of us! 😴

Enjoy your Sunday, everyone!

Local politics never really ceases to amaze me.

The right people, with the right intentions and a genuine commitment to their communities, can achieve wonderful things for the areas they represent. For me, that is what local politics should always be about.

Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case.

I’ve been reflecting on some recent local elections, where people chose to intervene, where untruths were told and where division was created. What’s perhaps most remarkable is how quickly some of those same individuals can change their tune, suddenly talking about working together when the outcome wasn’t quite what they’d hoped for.

What I cannot get over right now is the level of abuse sustained by local candidates, the intimidating behaviour of grown adults, the abusive and threatening nature of what people often thought was ok to say. The sad thing is these people were empowered by the division caused by others playing games. Luckily support and protection were provided as they always will be by me and the team, but nobody should need to go through that, I'm proud of how our candidates dealt with it all.

The most brilliant thing about local democracy is the people themselves.

Local people aren’t there to be told what to think, who to support or how to vote. They make their own minds up. They see what’s happening around them, they recognise genuine commitment and they learn from experiences where they've been hood winked in elections before.,

And ultimately, it’s their judgement that matters, not the political games being played behind the scenes.

I’m incredibly proud to welcome two fantastic new County Councillors to our team at County Hall, joining an already hardworking and committed group of people who genuinely care about the communities they represent.

We’ll continue doing what we’ve always set out to do: working together, standing up for local people, challenging where necessary and delivering wherever we can.

Because local politics should never be about personal agendas, settling scores or political games. It should be about people, communities and making a positive difference.

And that’s exactly where our focus will remain.

An evening spent at Red Row Primary School fulfilling my duties as a volunteer school governor.

I’ve always believed in the importance of giving something back to the community, and being a school governor is one way of doing just that.

Our schools are at the heart of our communities, and the staff who work tirelessly to educate, inspire and support the next generation deserve our encouragement and support.

But being a governor isn’t just about offering support. It’s also about asking the difficult questions, providing constructive challenge and holding senior leaders to account to ensure the very best outcomes for every child.

It’s about striking the right balance between supporting and challenging, making sure decisions are made in the best interests of pupils and helping our schools continue to improve.

It’s a privilege to play a small part in supporting the school, its staff and, most importantly, the children and families it serves. 😊

Really important people take time to make their voices heard on this one.

Thank you to all the staff working to keep children safe at Coquet Community College in such difficult circumstances. Making decisions like these is never easy, but the safety of students and staff must always come first, regardless of how popular those decisions may be.

Nothing should interfere with children’s education, especially threats of harm to a school or anyone in it.

I was due to visit today, but understandably that has now been cancelled. My thoughts are with all the staff, students and families dealing with what will have been a frightening experience.

Everyone deserves to feel safe at school.

🏡❤️ COULD YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO A CHILD’S LIFE?

This week, the Labour Government launched England’s first national fostering recruitment campaign, encouraging more people to consider opening their hearts and homes to children who need a safe, loving and supportive family environment.

With over 81,000 children in care across England, we urgently need more foster carers to help children stay close to their schools, friends, siblings and local communities.

The Government is taking action with:

✅ £88 million investment over two years to help deliver 10,000 additional fostering places by 2029.

✅ £12.4 million to support 11 innovative fostering projects, including short-break fostering and additional support for carers.

✅ A simpler, faster recruitment process to help more people become foster carers.

✅ Better training, practical support and guidance for fostering families.

❤️ You don’t have to fit the traditional picture of a foster family. People from all walks of life can potentially foster, and your individual circumstances will be considered.

Fostering can transform a child’s future, giving them the stability, encouragement and opportunities that every young person deserves.

Here in Northumberland, we need people to consider whether they could make that difference.

If you’ve ever thought about fostering, even just for a moment, why not take that first step and find out more?

Every child deserves somewhere safe to call home. ❤️

🚛 FAIR PAY FOR OUR REFUSE WORKERS

Yesterday I met with representatives from UNISON Northern and staff from Northumberland’s Refuse Department to discuss their longstanding concerns about pay and conditions.

The concerns raised are deeply troubling. Staff believe they are being paid significantly less than colleagues carrying out comparable roles in other councils across the North East.

These are hardworking frontline employees who provide an essential service to our communities, day in and day out, in all weathers. They deserve to feel valued, respected and fairly rewarded for the work they do.

What is particularly frustrating is the concern raised about the lack of meaningful engagement from Northumberland County Council and the difficulties staff and their trade union have experienced in securing discussions to address this historic issue.

My position is clear: staff deserve to be heard, their concerns deserve to be taken seriously, and there needs to be a willingness to sit around the table and find a way forward.

I want to thank the UNISON representatives and refuse staff who took the time to meet with me and speak openly about their experiences.

I will be raising these concerns with the Council and pressing for meaningful engagement to address the issues highlighted.

Fair pay, respect and a voice at work should not be too much to ask.
