🚨 URGENT WARNING: EXTREMELY HIGH RISK OF SYCAMORE POISONING IN HORSES 🚨
Sadly, we have already had one fatality, and the risk is extremely high at the moment.
Following the high winds this weekend, my paddock now looks like this. The ground is covered in sycamore seeds, and I have never seen such a high density of them.
⚠️ Why is this so dangerous?
Sycamore seeds contain toxins that can cause atypical myopathy, a devastating condition that damages the heart and skeletal muscles. Sadly, it is frequently fatal, and there is no specific antidote.
The biggest concern right now is short grass. The wind has dispersed the seeds so evenly across the paddock that there are virtually no seed-free areas for horses to graze. In longer grass, horses may be able to avoid some of the seeds more easily, but this does not make the pasture safe.
PLEASE CHECK YOUR PADDOCKS IMMEDIATELY.
❗ Fence off any areas contaminated with sycamore seeds and, where necessary, keep horses off affected pasture until it is safe. Do not assume that seeds will simply disappear or become harmless.
🌱 There is another concern for spring. Seeds that germinate can produce a bumper crop of seedlings, which are also toxic to horses. At least by then, mowing and collecting the seedlings may be possible, but prevention is essential.
Please do not underestimate the risk. Take a good look at your grazing, especially after the recent high winds, and share this warning with other horse owners. It could save a life.

🚨 Signs to look out for include:
•Muscle weakness, stiffness or difficulty walking
•Muscle trembling or sweating
•Depression or lethargy
•Rapid or laboured breathing
•Dark red or brown urine
•Difficulty standing or collapse
❗ Atypical myopathy is treated as an emergency and can progress very quickly. If you notice any of these signs, contact your us immediately. Do not wait to see if your horse improves. ❗
Sadly, early recognition is vital, although even with intensive treatment the outcome can be poor.
Please share this post with other horse owners to help raise awareness. ❤️
