Following the announcement of the new Newark Castle Exhibition opening on 10 November at the National Civil War Centre, we spoke to curator, Glyn.

Beneath and within Newark Castle lies hidden rooms...

Our latest Gatehouse Project blog explores the Castle's spaces currently no accessible to the public. It includes the vaulted undercroft, dungeons, centuries-old graffiti and medieval architectural features hidden within the walls.

As restoration work continues, these fascinating spaces are helping to reveal a very different picture of Newark Castle - not simply a riverside ruin, but an ingenious multi-level medieval fortress filled with stories waiting to be told.

Newark Castle has inspired artists for generations... and soon you'll be able to see that story unfold in a brand-new exhibition at the National Civil War Centre!

Opening Tuesday 10 November, the exhibition will bring together artworks, objects and stories that reveal how Newark Castle has been viewed, recorded and reimagined over the centuries.

While we continue our journey towards the Castle's next chapter, this exhibition is a chance to reconnect with the landmark we all know and love, and discover new perspectives on its rich history.

Newark Castle's hidden history is set to be revealed!

Thanks to an additional £2.5m of funding secured through the Mayor of the East Midlands, Claire Ward, we can now safely restore, enhance and open up Newark Castle’s hidden underground spaces, including the historic Undercroft and three dungeons.

We know there’s been strong local interest in bringing these fascinating spaces back into public use, and we’re delighted that this investment will help create even more unique and immersive experiences for visitors when the Castle reopens.
