Meet Diana!
One year ago, one of our residents began working with Jess, one of our Tenancy Support Workers. Now, they are celebrating a remarkable milestone by welcoming Diana, an 11-year-old rescue cat, into their home.

The resident, who previously experienced homelessness and struggled with their mental health, credits the support they received from Tyne Housing with helping them reach this milestone, building their confidence and independence along the way.

“About a year ago I was having a really hard time. Jess really put her trust in me. I could not have done it without the team at Tyne.”

“At the start of December last year, I really didn’t think I’d be in the position I am now.”

After adopting Diana from Tyneside Cat CentreTyneside Cat Centre, the resident quickly settled into life as a pet owner. Caring for Diana has brought routine and companionship into their daily life, and Diana has settled in just as well, with her own cat tower and favourite spot on the sofa.

To help Diana feel welcome in her new home, colleagues across Tyne Housing donated a range of pet supplies and gifts. This generous support helped Diana settle in comfortably and highlighted the care and encouragement that staff continue to show our residents as they work towards greater independence.

As National Housing Federation's comes to a close, we’re reflecting on a week of valuable conversations, partnership working and opportunities to showcase the difference supported housing makes to people’s lives.

We’ve welcomed local councilors and housing professionals to some of our properties, sharing more about our services, the support we provide and the challenges people face.

The visits have highlighted the vital role supported housing plays in preventing homelessness, helping people build independence and creating positive futures. They’ve also provided an opportunity to discuss how we can work together to overcome barriers and achieve a better outcome for residents and the community.

A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to visit to be a part of these visits and the important conversations, and to our dedicated teams for the commitment they show our residents everyday. 👏

A home can change everything 🏠

That’s why supported housing matters.

At Tyne Housing, we see everyday how the right support, at the right time, can help people overcome challenges, regain confidence, develop new skills and take positive steps towards the future.

Last year alone, we helped provide homes to 804 people, supporting them with not only housing, but with the practical, health and wellbeing support needed to sustain tenancies, achieve greater independence and build positive futures.

As a part of National Housing Federation’s first-ever Supported Housing Week, we’re celebrating the people, partnerships and services that make this possible, while raising awareness of the vital role supported housing plays in our communities.

By investing in supported housing, we’re creating opportunities for people to achieve stability, independence and brighter futures.

A safe, secure place to call home can change everything. 🏠
That's why we're incredibly proud to announce a landmark new partnership with national homelessness charity Crisis, helping to deliver an ambitious new housing programme here in the North East.
For the first time in its almost 60-year history, Crisis is providing homes directly to people experiencing homelessness, with plans to create more than 1,000 secure, affordable homes across Britain by 2035. And we're delighted that Tyne Housing has been chosen to play a key role in making that happen. We'll be bringing more than 50 years of local knowledge and housing expertise to the partnership, managing homes across Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside, and working alongside Crisis to help people build stability and move forward with their lives.
Because ending homelessness isn't just about putting a roof over someone's head. It's about giving people the security, support and opportunity to build a future.

Saturday marked both World Homeless Day and World Mental Health Day, providing an opportunity to reflect on the challenges many people face and the importance of accessible support, safe housing and positive wellbeing.

To mark the day, some of our residents took part in an awareness walk, helping to highlight the reality of homelessness by recreating the number of steps many people experiencing homelessness may take each day to stay safe and access basic necessities. The walk also sparked important conversations about the links between homelessness and mental health, and was a positive experience for everyone involved.

Meanwhile at the Joseph Cowen Health Centre, we created a World Mental Health Day display, providing wellbeing resources, information, and small items to encourage positive conversations around mental health and wellbeing.

Whilst awareness days are important, homelessness and mental health challenges don't exist for just one day of the year.

At Tyne Housing, we’re committed to supporting people every day. Last year alone, we helped provide homes to 804 people, alongside the wellbeing, health and practical support needed to help people build positive futures. We hope activities like these help raise awareness of the support and services available in our community.

☕ We were delighted to welcome some of our neighbours to Prospect Place last week for a brew and a chat. ☕

As a part of our Community Pledge, we’re committed to maintaining positive relationships wherever we work. These informal meetings provide a valuable opportunity to listen, share updates and discuss any questions or feedback from the local community.

“The meeting was a really positive experience and a great opportunity to meet with our neighbours to chat openly. These discussions are invaluable in helping us answer questions, understand local perspectives and continue building positive relationships within the community” - Director of Housing and Support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. We look forward to continuing these conversations and strengthening our relationships with local residents across our neighbourhoods.

Women’s homelessness can often be hidden in plain sight.

Last month, the Women’s Rough Sleeping Census took place across seven North East local authorities, with 64 women already identified through survey responses.

We’re proud that Tyne Housing has played an active role in supporting the census and helping to shine a light on the experiences of women facing homelessness across our region.

The largest ever Women’s Rough Sleeping Census in the North East is helping to build a clearer picture of women’s homelessness, including experiences that can remain hidden from official figures.

We’re pleased to see this important work receiving attention from ITV News Tyne Tees and hope it continues to raise awareness of why women’s homelessness needs to be better understood and services designed around women’s specific needs.

A brilliant day for our recovery community.

We were proud to help bring Newcastle Recovery Walk and Festival to life alongside Road To Recovery Trust and Revival Newcastle as part of Recovery Month.

Around 115 people joined us at Ouseburn Farm Charity Ltd, bringing together people with lived experience, families, support organisations and members of the wider community.

Our residents and volunteers played a huge part in the day, from Iain helping to cook and serve food for more than 100 people at the community BBQ, to Tom sharing his own recovery story.

A brilliant day celebrating the recovery journeys happening across our community.

We’re pleased to welcome Briony Livermore to the Tyne Housing team as our new Communications and Marketing Officer.

A Business and Marketing graduate from Manchester Metropolitan University, Briony brings experience across marketing, communications and digital engagement to the role.

Having recently moved back to Newcastle, she’ll be helping us share the stories behind our work, shine a light on the people and services that make a difference, and raise awareness of the support available across the region.

Welcome to the team, Briony!

This National Fitness Day, we’re celebrating the different ways our residents have been getting active, connecting with others and supporting their wellbeing this summer. 🚶

At Tyne Housing, we know that getting active is about more than fitness. It can help build confidence, improve wellbeing, reduce isolation and bring people together.

Residents at our Southernwood young adults’ accommodation took part in a twice-weekly group workout programme, with activities including bodyweight circuits, jogging, football drills and strength exercises.

Meanwhile, our Progression Team ran fortnightly Wellbeing Walks, with around 20 residents joining staff and volunteers to explore local spaces across Whitley Bay, South Shields, Gateshead and Newcastle.

It’s been fantastic to see residents getting active, meeting new people and building confidence, with some going on to take part in other activities and services at Tyne Housing.

A huge thank you to everyone who got involved this summer!
