Laura Devlin SDLP Laura Devlin, SDLP. Newcastle County Down. After 4 years in Castlewellan she took up the challenge of establishing a Downpatrick office for Margaret Ritchie MP.

Since 1999 Laura Devlin has been a member of the SDLP, starting her time in the constituency offices of long time local councillor, and at the time an MLA, Eamonn ONeill. From 2008-2012 Laura made the move away from politics and gained experience within the private sector - a time which she feels benefits her greatly in her current role as a Councillor. Missing local politics she took up her next challenge in opening a Constituency office for Sean Rogers MLA in Newcastle where she continues today as his Constituency Manager. In December 2013, she came full circle & was co opted onto the seat of her long time mentor, Eamonn ONeill. Having lived all her life in the Newcastle Electoral Area, she retains a very strong interest in local issues and spends a lot of time working on planning, housing and welfare cases. Laura lives in Castlewellan with her husband Sean, she likes to keep fit and is a member of the Murlough Running Club.

So…. The promenade lights are out (again!). This has been reported as urgent.

Council Officers are looking into a permanent fix. With a new type of light fitting to go into the existing brackets.

As we know outages were far too common last year! We urgently need the permanent fix as many people have reported to me that they feel unsafe which isn’t acceptable, especially as we approach the darker evenings and mornings.

Last week I tabled a notice of motion to Council along with my colleague Cllr Killian Feehan .

(The wording is below👇)

Maternity services at Daisy Hill are essential for our local area.

Huge thanks for the cross party support on such an important issue. 🫶 Let’s hope there is a solution and soon , as this worry for local women is so very unfair.

“That this Council recognises the vital role of inpatient maternity services at Daisy Hill Hospital and the importance of safe, accessible maternity care for women across Newry, Mourne and Down and the wider region; expresses its concern at the staffing pressures threatening the sustainability of the service and believes that women should not face unequal access to maternity care because of where they live; calls on the Minister for Health, Department of Health and Southern Health and Social Care Trust to work urgently to support recruitment and retention at Daisy Hill, protect inpatient maternity services and deliver a safe, sustainable solution that works for women, families and staff.

Council further calls for the Department of Health to review and reform the current arrangements for the recruitment, employment and deployment of specialist medical staff across Trusts, with consideration given to a region-wide approach that enables staff to be deployed according to need and supports more equitable terms and conditions, helping to address persistent recruitment and retention challenges.”

So please ensure bins are left out.

Council apologises for the hassle this has caused.

Council meeting tonight - I raised Bryansford Village and the need for a start date for the much needed (and talked about) resurfacing scheme.

Money has been allocated but we need to see the schedule of works and associated timeline!

Colin McGrath SDLP and I will keep pushing along with the local community until works finally commence & complete on site!

Lloyd Douglas: Mourne UUP one of your important issues too!
