UK inflation rose in September 2026 to its highest annual rate since October last year

Higher fuel prices were the main reason, with diesel prices reaching their highest level since July 2022⛽

Commenting on today’s inflation figures for September 2026, ONS Chief Economist Grant Fitzner said 💬

"Inflation climbed notably in September to its highest annual rate in almost a year. Increased fuel prices were again the main driver, with the cost of diesel the highest since July 2022.

"Other upward pressures included airfares and, to a lesser extent, computer games and live events, which are often volatile.

"These were partially offset by the cost of hotel stays, where prices rose by less than this time last year.

"The annual cost of both raw materials and goods leaving factories continued to rise, driven by higher crude oil and petrol prices, respectively."

‼️Inflation is the rate at which the prices of goods and services bought by households go up or down.

Latest economic news 📢

GDP grew 0.7% in the 3 months to August 2026, following revised growth of 0.5% in the three months to July 2026.

Commenting on today’s GDP figures for the three months to August, ONS Director of Economic Statistics Liz McKeown said 💬

“GDP growth showed further strength in the latest three months, led by the services sector, while both production and construction fell. Upward revisions to already strong services growth in June and July helped drive robust growth across the three months, despite services showing no growth in August.

“Computer programming was once again the largest contributor to growth in the three months to August. Looking at a longer-term picture, compared with the same three-month period a year ago, the increased strength now seen in services is evident not just in computer programming but across a range of business-facing industries, including legal services, research and development and advertising.”
