Barn Owl Trust Conserving the wild Barn Owl & its environment. Barn Owl info, advice, rescue & rehab. Registered Charity No. 1201419

https://www.barnowltrust.org.uk/

Founded in 1988, the Barn Owl Trust is a small national charity working very hard to conserve one of the most beautiful birds on Earth. Anyone who has ever watched a wild Barn Owl hunting at dusk has surely been touched by the experience. Sadly, these magical birds have become increasingly rare – and the reasons are all man-made. Lack of food due to intensive farming, the loss of roost and nest sites, road mortality and rat poison, are the main factors to blame. Happily, there is a great deal that can be done to help wild Barn Owls, and the environment they depend on. Because they are a bird of prey, at the top of the food chain, looking after our Barn Owls means that many other small creatures and plants benefit as well, helping to create sustainable biodiversity. Barn Owl friendly land management and the provision of safe nestboxes are the two most important ways to encourage Barn Owls, but everyone can help by learning about Barn Owls and supporting the Barn Owl Trust!

“The Barn Owl Inn is a charming and historic Devonshire Inn, situated on the edge of the popular village Kingskerswell, just a stone’s throw away from the busy A380/M5. The pub is packed with quirky, rustic charm. The stone floors, wooden beams, engaging pictures and characterful artefacts depict the history of this 300-year-old former farmhouse.

🦉The Barn Owl Trust is delighted to welcome the news that the Barn Owl has been chosen to feature on the Bank of England’s next generation of banknotes, alongside the bee, puffin and hedgehog. 💷

The announcement follows a public consultation launched by the Bank of England on 3 June 2026, asking people across the UK which animals they would most like to see represented on future banknotes. 💚

Members of the public were invited to choose from a shortlist of 18 species across three categories: mammals; birds; and amphibians, insects and fish. The month-long consultation closed on 3 July, receiving an amazing 478,531 responses. The Barn Owl proved to be a clear favourite in the bird category, receiving an outstanding 270,596 votes.🗳

The Barn Owl (Tyto alba) is one of Britain’s most distinctive and recognisable birds, and although this result shows how much they are loved, they still face a range of pressures in the modern landscape, making continued conservation efforts essential. You can help the conservation of this species and it’s environment by visiting our Support Us page. https://www.barnowltrust.org.uk/support-us/

We’re really looking forward to following the development of the new banknotes, and to seeing the Barn Owl take its place in our currency as an enduring symbol of the beauty of British wildlife.💚

🦉Marty the Tawny Owl💚

On the 22nd June 2026, an approximately ten-day old Tawny Owl chick was brought to the Barn Owl Trust. He had been found by a member of the public next to a river with no sign of a nest nearby.

The small owlet still had his eyes closed, was covered in fly strike, and was extremely dehydrated and hungry. The team provided much needed fluid and food, and spent a long while meticulously combing through his tiny feathers and fluff to remove the hazardous fly eggs.

Initially things did not look hopeful as the chick, now named Marty, was in such poor condition and was far too young to be away from its parents.
Miraculously, however, the chick gained strength with each passing day, and was soon more robust and getting increasingly vocal before mealtimes!

Marty gradually progressed from his initial box, up through different sizes of aviary, to one of BOT's mobile release aviaries, ready for his final stage of rehabilitation.
We are absolutely delighted to report that Marty was finally strong and independent enough to be released from our site this week. We will continue to provide support food from this aviary over the coming weeks to ensure him every success.
Good luck Marty, fly strong! 💚✨

🦉 Little Reg is finally free!🌊

We were delighted to be involved in the rescue of little Reg, the Barn Owl who found herself a very long way from home and in an extraordinary situation, lost at sea.⚓

Reg was released back into the wild, with supporters and media crews from BBC and ITV News there to share the moment.

Although Reg didn’t make her grand exit from the soft-release enclosure in time for the news cameras, she eventually took flight and we’re thrilled to say that she is now free and back where she belongs. 💚✨

It has taken a real team effort to get Reg to this point, and we’d like to thank everyone who played a part in her rescue, care and return to the wild, including the crew of the Fujitsu British soldier, Caister Independent Lifeboat, RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre and Marine and Wildlife rescue.

A huge thank you also to everyone who supported Reg along the way. 💚✨

From being lost at sea to flying free again what an adventure for one very special little Barn Owl! 🦉💚
