Artists Announced: Nine artists set to illuminate North Shields with new artwork

Nine artists from across the country have been selected to create new, temporary artwork. The work is being commissioned for Lowe!, a weekend of illuminating creativity in March 2027.

Artists creating new work responded to the theme of light and how it connects to North Shields. Each artist will examine this in a unique way; whether to shine a light on unknown communities; spotlight hidden architecture in the town; or simply to illustrate the many spaces reflecting imagination that thrive there.

Artists are;
Sana Burney
Zoe Slowslowzo
Jay
Lizzie Lovejoy
Sana Obaid

Nicola Lynch
Sally Southern
Harald Smylka

If you’re heading to Open Quay this weekend by bus or metro, then the creativity starts right away. The Transport Hub has been used by a range of artists since it opened and is affectionately known as the Bus Stope Gallery.

Louise Thompson is currently showing work in there. Inspired by the coastline, landscapes and people of the region. Louise works in oils, watercolours and line-and-wash techniques.

You can also see the installation that local artists Sum Place did as a permanent feature there.

No trip to North Shields is without a stop at Globe Gallery. A fixture on the cultural scene for over for over thirty years, they have been a cornerstone in championing accessible contemporary art and community engagement. For Open Quay visitors can get lost in the world of Christoph and Sebastian Mügge - Mourning Tea Tyne and Lost Frequencies is a multi media installation combining film, sound, found objects and local stories.

You can also pick up an OPEN QUAY MAP there!

At the centre of North Shields Cultural Quarter is North Tyneside Business Centre. Once a library, this beautiful building is now home to many organisations, from photography to the Music Education Service. So it’s great that on Saturday and Sunday the building will be open to welcome you.

First up on Saturday only is Helix Arts. See and experience their work - past, present and future - with a focus on reconnecting with nature, health and wellbeing, and how the charity supports artists and creatives to develop their career. The event will also launch their work with George King Architects ‘The People’s Tree project’ which won the National Trusts Sycamore Gap Tree commissions. Drop in, discover more and get connected.

On Sunday the space downstairs will be home to Motherfolk and Rachael Dee Brien. Motherly will be running workshops in the space to put mums front and centre. This will be fully interactive and we hope that visitors will contribute to messages of solidarity. In the same space Rachael will be hosting ‘Parentphernalia’, a drop in play session for children and their grown ups (no drop offs). Using everyday household objects participants will be encouraged to invent new games and be playful.

This building is going to be fizzing with creativity, so get down and get involved all weekend.

L O W E !

We had the pleasure this week of sharing our cultural quarter with witty and wonderful artist Jason Wilsher-Mills MBE. Inviting him to the town it was great to see with fresh eyes the appeal the spaces have to artists. We’re delighted to be able to commission a new piece of work from Jason for the weekend!

Jason will be the ‘anchor’ artist in our weekend long celebration of light - Lowe! - in March 2027. Along with several new commissions responding to light as an integral part of North Shields as a port and harbour, they will all be exploring light, and its infinite possibilities to uncover new meaning on this journey we call ‘life’.

Over the coming months we will be introducing you to the commissioned artists.
