✨ We’re back fresh from the weekend and easing into Tuesday – so it’s a good time for the jargon buster.

What is antiretroviral therapy (ART)?

It’s the medication used to treat HIV. It works by reducing the amount of virus in the body (viral load) to very low levels.

When taken as prescribed, ART enables people living with HIV to live long, healthy lives. It also means HIV cannot be passed on to sexual partners once the virus is undetectable (U=U).

Treatment today is simple and effective – often just one pill a day.

For those of us working in health and care, understanding HIV treatment and recognising HIV as a long-term condition is a simple step towards confident conversations that reduce fear around HIV.

We want everyone to feel confident talking about HIV, from testing through to ongoing care.

Normalising these conversations helps reduce stigma, supports earlier diagnosis and improves long-term health outcomes.

2- Conference at NTU with Public Health students and senior lecturers to revitalise the community engagement. Gender based violence with HIV, innovations in treatment for PrEP and HIV treatment that promote confidentiality and dignity for women and other vulnerable communities, education and awareness in the new communities that have limited access to internet and social media platforms and networks.
3-conversion about condom use, female condoms and HIV place in the general health promotion and awareness.

African institute joins World AIDS Day with local messages:

Monday, 1st December is World AIDS Day. This is a time to raise awareness about HIV, show support for people living with HIV, and take a stand against stigma.
The Sexual Health Service Nottingham and Nottinghamshire is using this opportunity to promote HIV testing and encourage conversations about prevention. To help us reach local communities across the City and County, especially those at greatest risk,

Our Community message:

Get tested, get treated, get undetectable
It’s World AIDS day. This is a time to raise awareness about HIV, show support for people living with HIV, and take a stand against stigma.
HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. It can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) related illnesses if left untreated.
You can lower your risk of getting HIV by using condoms and using PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) which is a medication that protects against HIV. Although there is no cure for HIV right now, by taking a daily medicine, it can keep the virus under control. With treatment, HIV can become so low in your blood that tests cannot find it. This is called being undetectable and cannot pass the virus to your sexual partners.
You can get free & confidential sexual health advice and access to testing from Sexual Health Services Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

African Institute supported the African Festival in Nottingham. We have had 325 conversations with people visiting the stall and around the crowd.
Excellent atmosphere for families and children too.

African Institute is in the MISSION to end HIV infection in Nottingham and the region by 2030. Today’s GET READY FOR A HOT SUMMER went extremely well. We have given out 180 condom packs which are a formidable prevention tool.

We are driving MESSAGES about PrEP use, and U=U. Conversations are always the best way to get to the bottom of things.
