Darker Nights - Making it appear as though you are at home, is a quick and easy way to prevent burglaries.

Some things you can do are:
💡 If you are out, use an automatic timer switch or smart lighting to turn on the lights when it gets dark, to make it look like someone is home.
🚨 Take time to check your alarm system, outdoor bulbs and security lighting works.
🏠 Ask a trusted neighbour, relative or friend to collect your post and open and close your home’s curtains whilst you’re away, to give the impression that someone is home.
📱 If you’re going away, don’t share details on social media until you return.

Road Safety - More than 30 people have lost their lives on our roads this year.

That's why, from 17 October, Leicestershire Police safety camera vans will be carrying out seatbelt monitoring as part of a pilot road safety project.

Failing to wear a seatbelt is one of the Fatal Five behaviours most likely to result in death or serious injury. During the pilot, motorists found not wearing a seatbelt will receive a warning letter explaining the dangers.

A seatbelt is your best protection in a collision. Make sure everyone in the vehicle is buckled up before every journey.

Darker Nights - As well as making your home look occupied, there are some quick and easy steps you can take to prevent opportunistic thieves from entering your home.

We are doing everything we can to keep you safe.

Some things you can do are:
🚪 Keep doors and windows locked and take the key out of the lock.
🔒 Prevent easy access to your home with locked gates or fencing.
🪟 Move/remove items which can provide easier access to windows, such as bins and garden furniture.
🪜 Burglars are known to use ladders to access upper windows to avoid intruder alarm sensors on the lower floors of properties. Keep ladders out of sight and ensure sheds, garages and outbuildings are locked.

⚠️ Road Safety ⚠️

Whilst we cling on to the last of the half-decent weather and move further into autumn, the clear skies and low sun pose hazards to everyone who uses the roads.

Today I attended a report of a 1-vehicle road traffic collision involving this vehicle. The driver was very lucky to walk away with only minor injuries having narrowly avoided a head-on collision with a tree.

This collision wasn't caused by excessive speed, distracted driving, or alcohol/ drugs. It was caused by the driver's reaction to being dazzled by the low sun.

Please remember the following guidance if you find yourself dazzled by the sun whilst driving:
1. Don't panic or make sudden manoeuvres.
2. Slow down and increase your distance from the vehicle in front- give yourself more time to react to hazards.
3. Look toward the nearside edge of the carriageway to maintain your vehicle's position in the road.
4. If you are completely blinded, safely pull over until your vision recovers.

There are also several things you can do to minimize the effect of glare:
1. Clean your windscreen (inside and out)- dirt, grease, and streaks make glare much worse.
2. Wear polarised sunglasses to prevent the effects of being dazzled.
3. Keep your dash clear- bottles or reflective clutter on your dashboard will bounce light up into your eyes.
4. Check your wipers and fluids- replace wiper blades that are worn and make sure you have enough screen wash.

A Bad Weekend for Drug Dealers in Melton and Rutland 😥

that drug activity is one of your main priorities. Here's what about it.

I was on duty over the weekend looking after Melton and Rutland Night Time Economy, but that didn't stop me from targetting drug dealers in both Melton and Oakham 🔎

On Friday evening, the vehicle below was spotted by colleagues in Oakham and raised a few eyebrows 👀 After a fishy story from the driver, a search of both him and the vehicle uncovered cash and suspected Class A drugs, earning him a one way trip to custody and his car a one way trip with the recovery agent. 1-0 Melton and Rutland Police ⚽

On Saturday I found myself in Melton assisting at a reported fight when a light-footed individual made a break for freedom through a block of flats. After a quick footchase 🏃 💨 I found the male doing his best impression of a bush and hiding in someone's garden (spoiler alert, it wasn't a very good impression). One stop search later and there goes another one off to custody on suspicion of Possession with Intent to Supply. 2-0 ⚽

Unfortunately, the paperwork for that job prevented the hat trick, but we are working tirelessly across our patch to tackle drug supply and make the area as hostile as possible for people planning to commit drugs offences in our towns and villages.

Drugs remain a beat priority for the Oakham and Barleythorpe beat, and this type of proactive policing will continue day and night.
