Well, as the season of 2026 ending is upon us, ๐Ÿ˜ฆ what a year it has been for the staff here at Okehampton castle.
A really good turn out of events throughout the year. A magnificent castle that is free for people to come to.

We will shut on the 31st of October and will not open till Easter, so keep an eye out as next year will be bigger and better.

Still open 10am-4pm daily till then, so bring family and friends to this wonderful creation.

On behalf of the staff of English heritage, Thank you for all your support and coming to see this castle, meaning it will be seen for years to come.

Throughout the winter, there will still be posts on the history, which is why it is important to share and like the page.

but for the next two weeks, come on a day out here, climb to the top, sit in the Chappel, pretent to cook in the kitchen, or sit on a bench and take in the views and history that dates back to 1066.

car park is 200yds from the entrance, disabled next to the entrance. See you there.

Did you know?

On Wednesday 20 May, we welcomed six relatives of Sydney
Simmons to Okehampton Castle for an exclusive guided tour
delivered by John, one of our Tour Guide volunteers.

Syndey Simmons was an extremely important figure at Okehampton
Castle, having bought the castle in 1911. At this time, the castle
ruins were largely obscured by ivy and trees and Simmons, a local
businessman, paid for the ivy to be cleared and the ruined walls
stabilised. In 1917 he gave the restored castle to the newly formed
Okehampton Castle Trust, who employed a custodian and produced
the first guide and map.

We were contacted early in the year by Nick, who was one of
Simmonsโ€™ 5x great nephews, regarding a visit he had planned with
some of his relatives, enquiring as to whether they might receive a
guided tour. We were, of course, delighted to oblige and Nick and
his family enjoyed their visit with us in May.

Nick said "We had a superb visit to the castle, received a warm
welcome and then a most memorable guided tour of the castle by
volunteer John. He proved to be extremely knowledgeable and
pointed out a whole host of details which otherwise would have
escaped us. Please can you convey our thanks to him for his time
and trouble, he is obviously passionate about the castle and itโ€™s
fascinating history".

Entry is free, open daily 10-4 and car park is 200yds from entrance.

Did you know?

Our annual Bluebell Sunday event in May was a huge success - in spite of the
great British weather we saw over 400 visitors! The rain and wind never stopped anyone enjoying the castle and the grounds. People from all over came and supported us here at English heritage and a lot in awe at the fantastic colour of purple surrounding the castle. A great day enjoyed by the public and the staff.

Don't forget, the castle is free and still open daily from 10-4 with the car park 200yds away.

See you there ! ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฐ
