I’m delighted to have attended the Law Society of Northern Ireland’s 2026 Annual Conference today at the Lough Erne Resort in Enniskillen.

This year’s theme, “Members First: Membership in a Modern Profession”, brought together colleagues from across Northern Ireland to look at where our profession is heading. The CPD-accredited programme covered qualification pathways, wellbeing and resilience, women in law, retirement planning, and the growing impact of technology and AI in legal practice.

Conferences like this are about more than the sessions. It was a real pleasure to catch up with colleagues, share experiences from practice, and hear what matters most to solicitors across the profession right now.

Thank you to the Law Society and everyone involved in organising such a worthwhile day.

Today I had the privilege of hearing Professor Christopher McCrudden CBE speak at The Irish Association Autumn Luncheon. His reflections on working to advance equality in Northern Ireland, through the development and implementation of equality and anti-discrimination law over several decades, were a masterclass in how law can shape a society.

What stood out most was his account of the Fair Employment legislation of 1989 and the significant changes it brought to the Northern Ireland labour market. He made a compelling case that law is not merely a symptom of change but can be one of its causes, and he reminded us that the successes of the past deserve as much attention as the challenges of the present.

His account of how equality law has evolved since the Belfast Agreement, through Brexit, and into the courts was both insightful and sobering. It was a reminder of how much depends on trust, and on the willingness of governments to honour the commitments they have made.

Professor McCrudden’s career and depth of knowledge in this vital area are truly admirable. Thank you to The Irish Association for bringing such an important voice to the table.
