LOCAL GOVERNMENT REORGANISATION CHAOS
Our very own Leader of West Lancashire Borough Council Councillor David Whittington, spoke with Radio Lancashire about the uncertainty Local Government Reorganisation is causing.
He stated that, “the uncertainty caused by the government going back on the proposals agreed in July, is causing disruption to planning for the future structure of councils in Lancashire and we need clarity as soon as possible.”
Due to the original plans for unitary councils forced by the government, policies and budgets were set for 18 months and now need to try and compensate for at least another 12 months.
That aside, it is now unknown yet again if the new unitary will stick with West Lancs/South Ribble/Chorley merging or a new distribution or addition of councils. Government grants are unable to be renewed causing budget constraints.
Businesses are also suffering, planning for a change no one knows how it will now look. This too is affecting local investment and so the local economy.
Real leadership is needed from this government so that councillors can plan and lead effectively locally.
