HM Coastguard Padstow The team consists of 12 local Coastguard Rescue Officers, all trained in rope rescue, water rescue, search & casualty care

The Coastguard Rescue Service is made up of 352 teams located near the coast in stations around the UK. The teams are made up of Coastguard Rescue Officers (CROs) who are trained to carry out rescues and provide assistance to those in distress on the UK’s coastline. There are approximately 3500 CROs and they carry out rope rescue, mud rescue, water rescue, casualty care and search duties in all weathers and at all times. The teams are paged by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCC) and respond to emergencies. They also assist other authorities such as the Police, Fire and Ambulance with their specialist expertise. The Coastguard Rescue Teams (CRT) will also provide safety advice to those they rescue and members of the public. After recovering any casualty the CRTs will provide the assistance needed then will transfer them to a place of safety. The teams will also provide support to the lifeboats and SAR helicopters per tasking by the MRCCs. Search
The Coastguard Rescue teams carry out searches of the shoreline which, depending on the team's location could be urban or remote cliff. The searches could be for vessels, wreckage, people who have abandoned ship, or missing persons. Water Safety and Rescue
Due to the nature of the work carried out by CROs, they are trained to be safe when in or near the water. They are trained to be able to carry out rescues in extremely rough conditions and the team will work together to recover the casualty from danger while ensuring that each team member is safe. Rope
Rope rescue methods are to recover casualties who have fallen or are stuck on cliffs. The teams work together to lower a cliff rescue technician who will assess the casualty, provide first aid treatment if necessary, and then recover the casualty to the top of the cliff. Casualty Care
All CROs are trained in the delivery of emergency casualty care, enabling team members to deliver immediate, relevant first aid to casualties prior to the arrival of paramedics or other emergency clinicians. Padstow Coastguard Rescue Team are trained in Search, Rope Rescue, Water Rescue & Casualty Care. This page does not in anyway represent the views of the MCA / HM Coastguard. Tasking to a casualty who required medical assistance on Diggory’s Beach. Newquay coastguard search & rescue team and Padstow Lifeboat were also tasked.

The team arrived on scene and located the casualty just off the Fisherman’s Path at Pentire. Two team members made their way down the path to the casualty.

Following an initial assessment, it was determined that the situation was not time-critical. The preferred and safest option was extraction via Padstow lifeboat, which was already proceeding to the scene.

In the meantime, team members rigged a cliff rescue setup as a backup.

Padstow Lifeboat arrived on scene and the coxswain made the decision to deploy the Y-boat so it could get close enough to shore to safely transfer the casualty.

Team members, including a paramedic, relocated to Padstow boathouse to meet the casualty on their arrival.

The casualty was medically assessed at the boathouse and was subsequently discharged into the care of their family.

All teams were then stood down and returned to their respective bases.

(38-2026)

The team was tasked to a person who had fallen and sustained some injuries near the Trevone natural swimming pool.

When arriving on scene the team found one of the Trevone North Cornwall Lifeguards with the casualty. Team members took over the casualty care whilst the lifeguard returned to their base to collect some additional pain relief.

Due to the incoming tide, the decision was made to place the casualty on to the team’s stretcher and carry them to the nearby cafe. There, they awaited the arrival of the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust ambulance whilst sheltering from the elements.

The team continued to monitor and record the casualty’s observations until the ambulance arrived. The casualty was then transferred onto the ambulance before being transported to the Royal Cornwall Hospital for further treatment.

Thank you so much to the staff at Trevone Beach Stores & Cafe for your hospitality and assistance. Also thank you to the Trevone North Cornwall Lifeguards for your invaluable assistance.

β˜€οΈ Heatwave Advice β˜€οΈ

It may be tempting to cool off in or near the water during a heatwave, but please take extra care when doing so. Despite the hot air temperature, the water can remain cool and cold water shock is still a risk.

Reduce the risk in warmer weather:

πŸ–οΈ Always swim at a lifeguarded beach

πŸ‘« Don’t go alone – look out for your friends and those you go with

πŸ’§ Be prepared – Take extra water with you to help you stay hydrated, as well wearing sunscreen and a hat

πŸ›Ÿ If you get into difficulty in the water, remember Float to Live – Lean back with your ears submerged and move your arms and legs to help keep you afloat until you can control your breathing 🌊

🚨 In an emergency at the coast, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard 🚨

Stay safe and cool 😎
