πŸŒ±πŸ’š INTRODUCING CARIAD CORNER – GROWING BRIGHTER FUTURES TOGETHER! πŸ’šπŸŒ±

Cariad Children’s Project is delighted to be developing Cariad Corner, an exciting community garden project in collaboration with Glantawe Riverside Park.

Thanks to Riverside generously making land available, we are creating an opportunity for local children to get involved in growing vegetables, herbs, flowers and plants while learning about nature, sustainability and the environment.

We want to give children the opportunity to:
🌱 Learn how to grow their own food and understand where it comes from.
🌼 Explore nature and discover the importance of protecting our environment.
🌿 Develop practical skills, confidence and creativity.
🌻 Make decisions about what they grow and how their produce is used and shared.
🀝 Work together, build friendships and feel part of their local community.

We also hope to explore creative activities using what we grow, including drying herbs and lavender, flower pressing and natural crafts.

At the heart of Cariad Corner is a simple belief: every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive, whatever their family circumstances.

We are incredibly grateful to Glantawe Riverside Park for helping us bring this vision to life. By working together, we hope to create something positive and lasting for children and families across Pontardawe and the surrounding Swansea Valley πŸ’›πŸ’šπŸ’™

Please get in touch if you have a child who may be interested in joining us, as we are preparing a waiting list.

Thank you to all the families that joined us for our first Family Food Forest sessions today. We fed the worms, made a 5* bug hotel, checked out the polytunnel and collected logs for our heugelkultur bed - where we hope the groups can help us grow veggies throughout the year.

It's so lovely to see children we've known since they were bumps in a belly or who we haven't seen since they were very small join us again and to be alongside families as they grow and play in the park. It's a pure privilege and joy to watch so many families enjoy the park. Thanks to Jane and Sally for volunteering with us today πŸ’š

What a beautiful day it's been today β˜€οΈ. Our volunteers have achieved so much again. Phil and Jane gathered resources for the garden, topsoil from the Pontardawe Arts Centre and woodchip from a locally felled tree, this was used to lay a new path for the market garden.
Another volunteer called Phil πŸ’š continued his fight against Japanese knotweed using a flame to burn new shoots. This method has been used consistently across the park to compliment other approaches to help control the spread of invasive species. Thanks for your help in the fight Phil! πŸ‘
If you visited the park recently you may have noticed that the hedge along the main path is undergoing some restoration from . This work is being funded by our grant from to increase the health and benefits to nature of this hedgerow.
Thanks to everyone for their hard work today πŸ’š

We have now completed this year's goat grazing project in partnership with Rumination Ltd and funded by NPT Local Places for Nature grant funds. The project has demonstrated the use of goats in the management of Japanese knotweed as an alternative to the use of chemicals. We will be applying for funding to continue this project for two more years and we will be writing a report to monitor the impact.
We are delighted with how much support we have received from our beautiful community, you have been amazing! People have been so interested in looking for alternatives to chemicals and have enjoyed spending time with the goats. Thank you everyone πŸ’š.
Rumination Ltd you rock! It's a joy to work with you, your professionalism, top notch animal husbandry, knowledge and passion for nature have made this project run so smoothly, thanks so much πŸ’š.
We are so lucky to be supported by NPT Biodiversity team and Local Places for Nature. Our hope is that the council will continue to explore more nature friendly alternatives to the control of invasive species. Next time you are looking at a patch of knotweed, please ask the question ❓ Could a goat do this?

Little competition time ! How long do you think it will take 11 goats to clear 300Meters squared? It’s a mix of bramble and Japanese knotweed .pontardawe . They went in at 10.45am this morning…. How long do think it will take a small gift to the one who guesses the closest! Put you guess in the comments
