This World Mental Health Day, we want to shine a light on 💡BEACON – the Addiction Education and Family Support Project from Lived Lives CIC.

BEACON brings together education, practical tools and lived experience to help families and carers better understand addiction, build healthy boundaries and find a way forward with greater confidence and hope. 😊🫶✨

Because families need support, too. Because lived experience matters. And, because no one should have to navigate the impact of addiction alone.❤️

It’s always great to see the impact of our programmes recognised 👏

The Independent Monitoring Board’s latest Annual Report for HMP Thameside highlights the “excellent service” provided by Shannon Trust, including the work of 22 peer mentors supporting 68 learners across reading and numeracy programmes.

During June alone, mentors delivered 132 learning sessions.

The report also highlights our monthly Book and Biscuit sessions on the induction wing, where new arrivals can choose a free book to encourage reading from the start of their time at Thameside.

Thank you to our mentors, staff and everyone at HMP Thameside who helps make this work possible. It’s brilliant to see their commitment and the difference peer-led learning is making.

ADDICTION IS DESCRIBED AS A FAMILY DIS-EASE - one person may be addicted but those around them suffer on a daily basis, affecting the mental and physical health of those who are often left carrying the weight of trying to support a loved one. BEACON ADDICTION EDUCATION AND FAMILY SUPPORT✨

Often the person struggling with addiction isn't the only one who needs support.

Addiction can impact an entire family. It can bring fear, confusion, heartbreak, uncertainty and exhaustion — while loved ones try to understand what is happening and how they can help without losing themselves along the way.

We understand this because our small team brings together something incredibly important:

professional expertise alongside real-life lived experience!

Between us, we have personal and professional experience of addiction and recovery, supporting loved ones through addiction, trauma, domestic and sexual abuse, mental health, prison and the criminal justice system — as well as the many different pathways towards recovery, healing and rebuilding family relationships.

We know that everyone's journey is different.

We also know that asking for help can feel like a huge step.

Our team brings years of experience, professional qualifications and accreditations across a range of areas, alongside something that can't always be learned in a classroom — an understanding of what it can really feel like to live through these experiences.

We believe in compassionate, non-judgemental and trauma-informed support.

Because recovery isn't just about one person.

🫶Families need support too. ❤️

Whether you're navigating addiction yourself, supporting someone you love, or trying to find a way forward after years of difficult experiences, you don't have to face it alone.
