Introducing AIFS-COMPO, a new data-driven forecasting system for global atmospheric composition.

Adapting ECMWF’s Artificial Intelligence Forecast System (AIFS) to aerosols and reactive gases, AIFS-COMPO is trained on data from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). It provides global forecasts up to 10 days ahead and explores the potential of AI for a new area of Earth-system prediction.

The first AIFS-COMPO charts are now available. They cover six groups of products: aerosol fields for dust, sea salt, biomass-burning aerosol and sulphate; particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10); and carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone and sulphur dioxide shown at pressure levels, at the surface and as total columns.

Today is World Food Day 🇺🇳

Climate change is one of the main drivers of food insecurity and complex emergencies. It also compounds other drivers of hunger, including conflict and economic downturns.

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) uses ECMWF data to monitor global risks.

Our seasonal and subseasonal forecasts help WFP:

• Identify areas likely to experience drought or flood conditions

• Activate contingency plans

• Pre-position food and logistics assets in vulnerable locations

• Estimate populations at risk of food insecurity

• Trigger anticipatory actions programmes

1 in 3 people around the world still lack access to early warning s...

ECMWF scientists have extended the Artificial Intelligence Forecasting System (AIFS) to jointly forecast the atmosphere, ocean waves, sea ice and key surface-ocean fields.

The resulting prototype, AIFS Marine, learns physically consistent relationships between atmospheric and marine components within a single forecasting model.

AIFS Marine expands the model state with a compact set of variables representing the surface ocean and sea ice. It produces skillful forecasts for almost all evaluated marine variables.

Today, ECMWF and The Parliament hosted the panel debate “The climate breaking point: Turning disruption into preparedness” at Brussels Climate Week.

️Summer 2026 will likely be remembered not just for the scale and frequency of its weather extremes, but for what they revealed about Europe's readiness to face them.

Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service at ECMWF, provided an overview of the European climate in 2026 drawing on data about extreme heat, drought, wildfires and ozone pollution from the Copernicus Climate Change Service and the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service.

The session also showcased ECMWF products related to the Copernicus Energy and Health Hubs as well as the suite of applications developed through Copernicus to support industry users and policy makers to inform themselves and make evidence-based decisions.

Today, on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, let’s take a closer look at how ECMWF’s forecasts support disaster prevention and emergency management:

🌪️ ECMWF operates a 24/7 global forecasting systems that predicts severe weather, including storms, heavy rainfall and tropical cyclones

🌊 ECMWF is the computational centre for the European Flood Awareness System (EFAS) and the Global Flood Awareness System (GloFAS), which provide flood forecasts and are part of the EU-funded Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS)

🔥 ECMWF supports the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) and the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS) by producing European and global fire danger forecasts for CEMS

By supporting initiatives such as Strengthening Early Warning in Africa (SEWA), the UN’s Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL) and the Risk-informed Early Action Partnership (REAP), ECMWF also helps strengthen early warning systems and improve anticipatory action across the globe.

This evening, ECMWF gave a special briefing on “Weather and Climate Intelligence for Europe” to MEPs Stefano Bonaccini, Lynn Boylan and Christophe Grudler.

Director-General Florian Pappenberger explained how weather and climate intelligence can support Europe’s security, resilience and competitiveness and Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service at ECMWF Carlo Buontempo highlighted the findings of the Climate Summer Review.

One of the main findings was that 37% of European land experienced an all-time record in daily, monthly or seasonal average temperature during summer 2026.

Come and meet ECMWF at United Nations Day in Bonn today! 🌍

Every year, the city of Bonn celebrates UN Day to mark the entry into force of the United Nations Charter.

We’re joining the celebrations on Bonn’s Market Square. Our staff are welcoming visitors and sharing more about ECMWF’s work in close collaboration with partners across our Member and Co-operating States on medium- and extended-range weather forecasting, and our contributions to European initiatives Copernicus and Destination Earth (DestinE).

📍 Visit us at tent 3.

🌍🌐 This week, our Meet the Experts series for the European Commission’s Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative features Harrison Cook.

Harrison is a Research Software Engineer for Machine Learning at ECMWF. He works on Anemoi, the open-source framework developed by ECMWF and several national meteorological services that supports the development of AI-based Earth system models within DestinE.

He also helps develop Forecast-in-a-Box, which brings AI models and the tools needed to run them together in a portable forecasting workflow. The aim is to make it easier for users to run and adapt forecasts on their own computing infrastructure.

Behind every weather forecast lie millions of observations gathered from a global network of satellites, aircraft, ships, buoys and other instruments that continuously monitor the atmosphere, oceans, and land surface.

But not every measurement is equally trustworthy, and observation quality can change over time as instruments age and become less accurate.

That is why ECMWF monitors observation instruments throughout their full lifecycle, from their initial rollout and evaluation through to their eventual retirement. The ECMWF observations dashboard shows, in near real time, the status of the observing system.

ECMWF's observation monitoring activity helps improve the global observing system under the umbrella of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). ECMWF also advises on the placement of new observations.
