Busy Summer for Redcar Coastguard Team
When the pager goes off, we go 24/7, day or night. It has been a busy year with more than 90 taskings (22 taskings in July) for the Redcar Coastguard team.
Responding to taskings from our Humber Operations room is just part of what we do. We train every Tuesday night in various primary disciplines, which include: water rescue techniques, rope rescue techniques, search and recovery and casualty care.
We must keep our skill sets at the highest standards to be able to operate in sometimes very challenging environments and weather conditions.
We work very closely with our flanking Coastguard teams: Staithes Coastguard, Whitby Coastguard, Hartlepool Coastguard Rescue Team and in partnership with other emergency services.
We regularly work alongside Cleveland Police negotiators at incidents with people in crisis. We recently attended a familiarisation session where we gained an insight into the skills and techniques they use to communicate with people in crisis.
Police negotiators' safety is one of our primary concerns to keep them safe, especially at locations working at height near cliff edges. Practical sessions, using our specialist rope rescue equipment, to demonstrate techniques which allow us to keep the police negotiators safe while engaging with people in crisis.
Working together as one multi-agency team to keep the public safe and be there when things do go wrong.
We urge the public to take extra caution, especially during the warm summer school holidays. The sea is brutal. It can turn from a family fun day at the beach into a tragedy very quick.
In any coastal emergency, call 999 and ask for Coastguard.
