🌸Period Tips for People with Additional Needs🌸

For many young people with additional needs, periods can bring extra challenges alongside the usual physical changes. Sensory sensitivities, difficulties noticing body signals (interception), changes to routines, anxiety, executive functioning challenges, and managing discomfort can all make periods feel overwhelming at times.

That's why we've created this series of practical, accessible tips to support young people and their families. πŸ’—

Our guide includes:
✨ Creating a period kit for home, school, or when out and about
✨ Managing sensory needs and finding products that feel comfortable
✨ Reducing sensory overload during periods
✨ Managing cramps and discomfort
✨ Remembering to eat, drink, and look after yourself
✨ Gentle reminders that everyone's experience is different

There is no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to periods. What works well for one person may not work for another, and that's perfectly okay. Finding the right products, routines, sensory supports, and coping strategies can take time, but small adjustments can make a big difference.

πŸ’š Most importantly, be kind to yourself. Periods can be challenging, and it's okay to take things at your own pace.

🌟 Building confidence in everyday life skills with shaving πŸͺ’

Learning personal care skills, such as shaving, can be an important step towards greater independence. From creating routines to managing sensory sensitivities, there are lots of ways to make the experience work for the individual.
Everyone's needs, preferences, and comfort levels are different. What works for one person may not work for another, and that's okay. Finding the right tools, products, and approach can help make shaving a more positive and manageable experience.

We have come up with a bunch of tips on building routines, reducing sensory discomfort, exploring alternative hair removal options, and looking after skin afterwards.

πŸ’š Remember, shaving is a personal choice, and there is no right or wrong way. The goal is to help individuals feel comfortable, confident, and in control of their own personal care.

πŸ’š Disclaimer: These tips may not be suitable for everyone and may not work for every individual. Your young person may also choose not to shave at all, and that's perfectly okay. Shaving is a personal choice, and everyone should feel comfortable making the decision that is right for them.

Take a look at our helpful tips and ideas for people with additional needs.

🌟 Celebrating Our New SEND One-to-One PEEP Sessions! 🌟
Over the last two weeks, we have been delighted to introduce our SEND One-to-One PEEP Sessions in our wonderful sensory room at the Eric Manns Building as part of Rotherham Family Hubs.
It has been fantastic to welcome families into a calm, nurturing environment where children can explore, play, communicate and learn at their own pace, with activities tailored to their individual needs and interests.
These sessions provide valuable opportunities for parents and carers to spend quality time with their child, discover new ways to support their development through play, and enjoy dedicated time together in a welcoming and understanding space.
The smiles, engagement and positive feedback we have received already have been truly heartwarming. We are proud to be able to offer personalised support to SEND families and help create positive experiences that build confidence, strengthen relationships and celebrate every child's unique strengths.
A huge thank you to all the families who have attended so far. We look forward to continuing to support many more children and families through these special sessions. πŸ’™

🚻 Tips for Hygiene in Public Places for People with Additional Needs 🌟

Public toilets and hygiene facilities can sometimes feel overwhelming for people with additional needs. Small adjustments can make a big difference in helping individuals feel more comfortable, confident, and supported.

βœ… Consider ear defenders or noise-cancelling headphones when in public toilets as they can be loud.
βœ… Use a RADAR key to access accessible facilities
βœ… Using hand sanitiser spray or antiviral hand wipes may be a useful alternative if you have sensory needs around hand dryers, cold hands, etc.
βœ… Bring familiar items, such as tissues, if certain textures are uncomfortable
βœ… If they want to go to the toilet on their own but have anxiety about locking the door, consider standing outside the cubicle so they do not need to lock it.
βœ…Talk them through each step of what will happen next or use pictures to help explain.

Remember, everyone is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. πŸ’š
