💜 A CHILD SHOULD NEVER HAVE TO BECOME A VICTIM BEFORE WE TAKE RISK SERIOUSLY.

That is one of the strongest messages behind Maya’s Law.

We often hear about safeguarding failures after something terrible has happened.

Reviews take place. Questions are asked. Recommendations are made.

And families are left asking whether something could have been done differently.

But what if we could identify more of those risks earlier?

What if we could make it easier for legitimate concerns to be raised, relevant information to be assessed and protective action to be taken?

That is what Maya’s Law is fighting for.

We are calling for a dedicated Child Risk Disclosure Scheme, with appropriate safeguards, to help protect children from adults who may pose a relevant risk.

Maya was only two years old.

She couldn’t recognise danger or ask the questions adults could ask.

Children should not have to find their own voice before adults act to protect them.

💜 For Maya. For prevention. For every child.

HOW CAN THESE TWO THINGS EXIST AT ONCE?

How can someone be considered at such risk that they are offered a safe house by the authorities, yet the very person they fear can still be cleared to work with some of the most vulnerable children in society?

“Grace” later described feeling gaslit by the very systems meant to protect people, and frustrated by her attempts to raise safeguarding concerns.

This contradiction is one of the driving forces behind End the Odds.

When serious concerns exist in one part of the system, how are they assessed and shared with those responsible for safeguarding children?

How can these two realities exist side by side?

Thank you to Right to Equality for previously highlighting Grace's story.

The small price of a name change should never come at the enormous price abused children can pay.

A new name should not be a clean slate !

We came across the DellasLaw campaign and immediately saw the connection with End the Odds.

Names can change. Addresses can change. People can move between areas and organisations.

Safeguarding information must follow the person.

Della's Law is campaigning to close dangerous gaps around name changes and the identification of registered s*x offenders.

This is why joining the dots matters and why those dots need to stay joined.

Please watch and support Della's Law. ❤️

The Jane Doe movement may be happening thousands of miles away, but the questions being asked should sound very familiar.

Who knew what?

Who held the information?

Who was responsible for safeguarding?

And who was joining the dots?

Different country. Different systems. Same uncomfortable questions 😞

Safeguarding shouldn't depend on somebody being lucky enough to uncover the missing piece.

We need systems capable of recognising patterns, sharing relevant safeguarding information appropriately, and seeing the whole picture before another person is harmed.

This is exactly why safeguarding cannot begin and end with a DBS certificate.

A childcare support worker was in a position of trust around a vulnerable 16-year-old yet that position gave him access to the very person safeguarding systems were supposed to protect.

We need to keep asking the uncomfortable questions: What was known? What checks were carried out? Were concerns held elsewhere? And could better information-sharing have identified risk sooner?

Safeguarding has to be about joining the dots before another child becomes the evidence that something went wrong.

Who is joining the dots? Who is checking patterns of concern? And who is ultimately responsible for making sure the adults entrusted with vulnerable children are suitable to be there?

Children deserve safeguarding systems designed to protect them before something goes wrong !
Not questions about missed opportunities afterwards.

Thank you to NOVO ORG for covering this and raising awareness
