Great leaders don’t just tell people what to do, they explain why it matters.

When leaders communicate the purpose behind the task, the vision, or the mission, they inspire others to follow because they believe in it, not just because they have to.

The ‘why’ fosters trust, loyalty, and a deeper connection between leaders and their teams. It builds a shared belief and strengthens the bond that drives success.

So, next time you're leading a project or rallying your team, remember: as Simon Sinek puts it, "Start with why.”

Our reading list - made in collaboration with the Army Library and Information Service (ALIS) - returns with our first truly fictional book!

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson follows a soldier trying to save his men from an army that sees them as expendable in a senseless war, a general trying to unite ten armies against a single foe and bring a moral code to life, and a student stumbling across the true cause of the war.

Filled with leadership lessons and examples, good and bad, this read shows that the best leaders are the ones who genuinely care for and develop the people under them.

ALIS is a FREE resource for any serving member of the Army (regular and reserve), available through Defence Connect. Depending on availability ALIS can provide an E-book or physical copy posted to you for free.

Chris Chant is a senior civil servant within the Ministry of Defence. Since early 2024 he has been the senior civilian resilience and home defence advisor to the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff (Support Operations). He oversees Project PUMA, which is seeking to develop civilian enablers across government and in industry to support military mobility. He has recently been appointed as the Ministry of Defence senior sponsor for Civil Military Interaction (CIMIC).

Chris first joined government in 2006 and has held national security and defence focused roles in policy development, intelligence assessment, and operational delivery. From 2010-11 Chris served in the Private Office of the Security Minister, acting as an advisor to three successive ministers across two government administrations. In 2020 Chris was appointed Director of the Joint Maritime Security Centre, the UK’s operational coordination and information sharing organisation for maritime security. During his tenure he oversaw a period of significantly enhanced joint working and coherence between the Royal Navy and the many civilian agencies involved in maritime security.

Concurrently, Chris also served as the United Kingdom’s National Coordinator for Maritime Security Response. In 2022 Chris joined the Department of Transport to oversee the Ministry’s resilience and contingency planning portfolio and lead the UK’s Transport Security Operations Centre.

Outside of the Civil Service Chris spent time as a security sector reform consultant, designing and implementing security sector reform programming on behalf of the UK government, and working in fragile and conflict affected states including Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Somalia.

Chris joined the British Army Reserve in 2020. In 2024 he commissioned into the General Service Corps after completing the reservist commissioning course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He is a CIMIC advisor currently embedded within the Joint CIMIC Group.

Initiative is a fundamental of effective followership. The leader provides the vision and direction, but it is followers who turn this into action. The followers understand the context as well as their role and responsibilities. As such, they anticipate what is needed of them within their own level of competency and authority and are proactive in maximising the value they add to the team’s outcomes. They identify problems and challenges, actively seeking creative solutions. In the Army, disciplined initiative is a fundamental product of Mission Command.

Empathy and compassion are essential leadership skills, especially when it comes to 'knowing your people,' a cornerstone of the Army Leadership Framework. It’s about understanding others’ emotions and genuinely seeking to improve their situation.

But there's more to it: familial care, the deep bonds formed in high-pressure environments like training and operations, which create a kinship between leaders, followers, and peers.

While there’s a leadership 'sweet spot' that balances empathy with rational decision-making, both are crucial when courageous action is needed.
