💜 LIGHTING UP SAUNDERSFOOT HARBOUR FOR WORLD POLIO DAY! 💜

Tonight, the Schooner at Saundersfoot Harbour will be illuminated in purple to mark World Polio Day – 24 October. 💜

But why purple? 🤔

The purple colour represents the purple dye used to mark the little fingers of children who have been vaccinated against polio in countries where vaccination campaigns take place. 💜☝️

World Polio Day raises awareness of the global fight to eradicate polio, a devastating disease that can cause lifelong paralysis. Thanks to vaccination, we are closer than ever to a polio-free world, but there is still work to do.

Rotary has played a major role in the global effort to end polio, helping to protect millions of children through its End Polio Now campaign. 🌍💉

So, when you see the Schooner glowing purple tonight, remember what it stands for: hope, protection and a world free from polio.

💜 Let’s light up Saundersfoot for a polio-free future!

💜

❤️ Saundersfoot held a very moving remembrance on the main beach this morning.

The Chair of Love Saundersfoot Phil Baker said a few words to the assembled groups, residents, and visitors. Saundersfoots Côr y Môr performed a very moving Calon Lân and led the group in the Welsh National Anthem.

"On 21 October 1966,
144 people – 116 of them children – tragically lost their lives when a spoil tip slid down the mountain, engulfing Pantglas Primary School and some of the surrounding houses.

Many of us may have personal or family memories of that day.

As a 9 year old, I lived only six miles up the same Valley in Merthyr Tydfil.

My Granddad and Dad both left the Town Hall and went to help dig that day.

My Mum helped in the temporary mortuary set up in a local chapel.

None of them ever spoke much about those few days.

Aberfan is a similar size to Saundersfoot.

It is unbearable to think that 116 children went to school that morning but didn't come home."

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 📣 Notice 📣 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

As Wales prepares to remember all of the 144 victims of the Aberfan disaster, 60 years after the tragic event etched forever in Welsh history.

Our Chair Phil Baker wanted the residents of Saundersfoot to have an opportunity to gather together to pay their respects.

It is suggested that we gather informally at 09:00 on Wednesday 21st October, on main beach Saundersfoot.

We can then observe a one minute silence at 09:15, joining other groups and communities around Wales.
