A trip to the Sheffield & South Yorkshire Navigation today near Rotherham, for a young swan reported to be carrying fishing tackle, with a line protruding from the animal’s beak.

A barbed lure was found beneath one of the bird’s wings, which was safely removed. Uninjured, the swan was able to be released a short time later.

Thank you to everyone who contacted us today about this young swan, who was found beside a busy main road outside B&Q on Hull Road in York. We suspect she may have made a rather unfortunate choice of landing spot, but thankfully, she was otherwise unharmed.

We’re pleased to say the bird has now been safely released onto a suitable stretch of water, away from the dangers of the road.

This poor chap had a rough time after landing on the territory of another pair of swans in Leeds last week. Established pairs can be particularly brutal when it comes to defending both their territories and family group.

Bruised, bloodied and muddied, the bird was in a weak state and lucky to be alive when our rescuer arrived. Thankfully now safe and recovering well in our care.

Remember us? 🦢

Five weeks ago, our team were forced to rescue five injured cygnets from the Chesterfield Canal near Worksop. They were found to have been cruelly targeted with projectiles fired from a catapult.

We weren’t confident they’d all survive, given their condition on arrival - two of the birds had been repeatedly targeted. But we were determined to give them a chance.

With the right treatment and care, the condition of all five improved day by day. Soon, they were introduced to our outside pens to continue onto the next stage of their rehabilitation here with us.

With their treatments complete and their wounds fully healed, they were this week ready to return to the wild. Released at an undisclosed location, they are now back enjoying the freedom of the wild and the peace they rightly deserve, in the company of other young swans.

Our deepest thanks to all concerned with their rescue, treatment and care. With results like this, it makes our hard work, effort and sacrifice all the more worthwhile in providing these birds with a better ending.

The Police investigation into this act of wildlife crime is ongoing, and anyone with any further information should contact South Yorkshire Police quoting incident number 705 06-09-26.
