At last week’s 2026 RAF Sports Awards, we were delighted to be named the RAF Central Fund Unit of the Year, in recognition of our relationship with British Cycling.
As well as RAF Shawbury proving a highly successful location for Team GB BMX freestyle athletes to train for National, World and Olympic competitions, our collaboration to develop performance coaching relevant to elite sport and flying training has greatly benefitted both organisations.
Equally, the partnership has supported the development of grassroot BMX club riders, as well as regular community development days enabling young people to experience BMX for the first time under the guidance of the country’s top riders and coaches.
RAF Shawbury’s Gliding Club’s training of Air Specialist 1 Bradley, preparing him to undertake an aerobatic public display at the annual RAF Cosford Air Show, was also recognised, with the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association picking up the RAF Sports Endeavour Award for 2026.
