September and October of each year is the deer mating season which is called the rut.

Please take extra care driving at dawn and dusk.

During the rut males (stags) compete for the attentions of the females (hinds) and will then try to defend the hinds they attract.

Rival stags challenge opponents through noise and posturing. If neither stag backs down, a clash of antlers can occur, and stags will occasionally be injured or killed.

Some widely published advice for rut watchers … essentially give the deer loads of space to behave normally and naturally.

•Do not approach any deer to within closer than 50m, and stay at least 100m away from rutting deer.

•Use binoculars for close up viewing and use zoom on a camera to keep well away from the rut.

•Do not surround the deer as it may make them nervous.

•Take extra special care not to intrude on any rutting male deer which may be fighting, roaring, displaying or otherwise defending their hinds.

•Don’t rut watch with a dog.

•Deer taking an interest in you is not good. Leave immediately and do so slowly Do not shout or wave at the deer.

•If a ranger or warden asks you to move away from a deer or the rut this is for your safety.

Remember that stags are wild animals that can reach 200kg and stand more than 1.5m tall. Whilst fuelled by testosterone during the rut their behaviour needs to be observed from a safe and respectful distance.

After something like twelve weeks without any notable rain, it is a blessed relief to have a few showers falling across the crags and moors. The rangers out on patrol this evening were treated to a double rainbow across Surprise View and Longshaw.

met with rangers and the local gamekeeper today on Snake Pass and provided situational awareness on the extent of the fire and (by using thermal drone imaging) mapped where the smokers (areas of peat still smoking) and hotspots remain. Hotspotting (finding and digging out or wetting the considerable number of hotspots) will continue for at least several more days. //
