Arguably one of the harder test for fire service recruitment. It’s tests your endurance, strength and stamina.

🏋️‍♀️Equipment Carry🏋️‍♂️
You’ll be running shuttles across a 25m course, integrating fire service equipment such as hoses, strainers, and baskets as well as a few sprints between the working loads!

To practice for this test;
🚒 Work sets under fatigue
🚒Add HIIT style sessions to your workouts
🚒 Run hard, you’ll be able to have a breather once you’re finished!

🚨The first steps of our practical recruitment day🚨

The Multi-Stage Fitness Test (beep test) is an important part of preparing for firefighter recruitment, with Level 8.8 a target for new recruits. Once you hit Level 8.8, you’ll be deemed to have hit the minimum Vo2 (42.3) max required to join DWFRS.

🏃 Top 3 tips:
🚒Build your aerobic fitness with regular runs to develop a steady base
🚒Practise beep-test turns and pacing, this will help you understand when you are expected to turn and the timings between each beep
🚒Allow time for rest and recovery, don’t over do the training or practice every day, as you’ll become fatigued and this not benefit you on your assessment day.

Don’t forget, our team is there the support and encourage you through this. It’s likely you’ll be invited to station before your official assessment day to practice the beep test, so we can ensure you’re in top shape to pass the rest of the tests! 👩🏼‍🚒

It’s , when we celebrate emergency call handlers in the blue light services. 🚒

Managing an emergency is so much more than the initial 999 call – our Control Firefighters ensure that fire cover is maintained across the Service, mobilise officers and support appliances, liaise with partner agencies… the list goes on!

Why not become apart of an incredible team who do life-saving work every day! We’re recruiting now, so take a look at the current vacancies page of our website www.dwfire.org.uk for more information and to apply.

When you first apply, the process may seem daunting, but don’t worry, we have your back!

On your initial application, someone from your local station will get in contact to ask about your hours of availability, commitment you can give to your station. You’ll then be invited in for a station visit, where you can ask as many or as little questions as you’d like. Someone from the team will give you a brief tour, and provide you with information about the rest of the application process. This will include how to fill out your HR072 (the hours in which you can provide cover for your station), the training expectations to meet the minimum requirements on your recruitment day, the maintenance of the fitness once you pass your recruitment day to keep you fit for your basic skills course.

This timeline may range from a couple weeks to a few months, and generally follows this schedule:
🚒 pre screening call
🚒 station visit (and approval of hours from our HR team)
🚒 online tests
🚒 fitness/recruitment day
🚒 interview
🚒 medical/ eyesight test
🚒 DBS/ reference check

Once you have met all the DWFRS Requirements, you’ll be assigned your a basic skills course and your journey to becoming a firefighter will be well underway!

Be sure to keep an eye out for our next post, where we’ll highlight the requirements of the recruitment day ( 1 by 1 ) and how to meet our criteria!
