Oliwia's is The Eyes are the Best Part by Monika Kim.

Bookabout is our monthly book group hosted on the last Thursday of every month from 2-3pm. Our next group will be held on Thursday 29 October.

Come along and discuss the novels that you have been reading over the last month with other book lovers. Get recommendations on books you may not have thought about trying and share with others the stories you have been loving.

Hannah's is Deserter by Junji Ito.

Deserter is a collection of 12 short stories by manga artist and writer Junji Ito, with the titular story being the final one in the book. Some of the standout sections for me were the chapters 'Bullied', 'The Long Hair in the Attic', 'Where the Sandman Lives', and 'Deserter'.

Ito often utilises themes of body horror, the supernatural and unexplainable enigmas. And while many of his illustrations are disturbing, I am deeply in awe of how he crafts his horror through the layout of the panels and mastering at which point readers turn the page. For example, 'Bullied' left me feeling shocked as I turned to the final page of the chapter as it stuck a horrific chord in me.

Junji Ito is my all-time favourite manga writer/artist and I cannot sing his praises high enough. If you're a fan of the horror genre and want to read (in my opinion) some of the best horror literature and art, you can do no wrong when choosing this collection or any of Ito's other works. The perfect read for Halloween season!

Ankica's is The Cellist of Sarajevo by Steven Galloway.

This is a fictional novel based on the 1990s Siege of Sarajevo. The premise pivots on a cellist who plays the Adagio by Albinoni for 22 days in a tow to honour the 22 people who died in a bombing while waiting for bread (based on the true event). The book follows three separate people through their life at that time, who do not directly interact with the cellist or each other, but who are deeply affected by what he does; a female sniper tasked with keeping him alive, a bread maker whose family has escaped the city, and a father who must travel through the city to get fresh water for his family.

In a besieged city, the objective is to drive to submission the defending people to destroy all hope, to condemn people to absolute deblilitating fear for their lives. The cellist sits in the middle of the square, sets up his instrument, and plays. He creates something beautiful, melodic, and mesmerising. Among the destruction, he demonstrates power over fear, a symbol of hope, and a light that reminds us of humanity and normality.
