What is a micron comb, and what can it tell us about your kitchen extract system?

When it comes to kitchen extract cleaning, it's not just about what you can see – it's about what you can measure!

At Swiftclean, our technicians use a specialist tool called a micron comb (or wet film thickness gauge) to measure the thickness of grease deposits inside kitchen extract ductwork.

So, how does it work?

The technician places the comb against the inside surface of the duct and draws it across the grease deposit. The calibrated teeth help determine the thickness of the grease layer, measured in microns (µm).

What do the readings mean?

📏 1 micron = 0.001mm, so even a seemingly thin layer of grease can be significant.

Under BESA TR19 Grease guidance, grease deposits reaching an average thickness of 200 microns indicate that cleaning is required. A maximum deposit thickness of 500 microns is also a key threshold requiring attention.

Regular testing helps identify grease build-up, assess cleaning requirements and provide measurable evidence of the condition of your extract system.

Why does it matter?

Grease accumulation inside kitchen extract ductwork can create a serious fire risk. By measuring deposits rather than relying on visual inspections alone, we can help businesses make informed decisions about cleaning and fire safety compliance.
