Happy Halloween, Southend! 👻

We love seeing your pumpkin masterpieces this spooky season, but what happens after the fun? 💀🎃

Here are some fang-tastic ideas:

🧡 Pop your pumpkins on top of or to the side of your food caddy for collection next week in suitable food caddy bags (other bags are not biodegradable)
🔪 Chop them into smaller pieces and put them into the food caddy bags before you drop them into the caddy
🍲 For the edible bits…why not brew up a tasty soup or pie?

Let’s keep Southend boo-tiful and waste-free 💚

🎃 Is your little monster aged 2 or 3?

This Halloween, give them something better than a treat – protection against flu. 👻

Even little monsters have Super Bodies, but sometimes they need an extra helping hand.

The free NHS flu vaccination helps protect children against flu, which can sometimes make little ones seriously unwell.
For most children, it's just a quick, painless nasal spray – no needles needed.

Don't let flu spook your little monster this winter.

If your child was aged 2 or 3 on 31 August 2026, you can book their free flu vaccination through your GP practice or a participating pharmacy.

🔄 Please share this post with friends and family to help us protect more little monsters this winter.

Southend's first-ever Music Board has officially launched.

Bringing together leading voices from across the music industry, the new board will help celebrate Southend's rich musical heritage while supporting the next generation of local talent.

From legendary acts including Procol Harum, Dr. Feelgood, Eddie & The Hot Rods, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly., Nothing But Thieves and The Horrors, to internationally acclaimed pianist Benjamin Grosvenor, Southend has a proud history of producing and nurturing musical talent.

The Music Board will strengthen collaboration across the sector, connecting artists, venues, festivals, promoters, educators and community organisations to help ensure music continues to thrive in our city.

Cllr Matt Dent, Cabinet Member for Business, Culture, Music and Tourism, said: "Southend has a rich and diverse music scene, with talented artists, venues and organisations contributing to the city's cultural life every day. The Music Board will help bring those voices together, strengthen collaboration and support music in all its forms."

As an ambitious coastal city, Southend recognises music as one of its greatest cultural strengths, helping attract visitors, support local businesses, create opportunities and bring communities together.

Protect yourself against Meningitis B – get vaccinated before the December deadline

Young people across Southend are being encouraged to check if they are eligible for the MenB vaccine and get protected before the first-dose deadline of 31 December 2026. Nationally, vaccine uptake remains lower than expected, leaving many young adults unprotected against meningitis B and septicaemia.

The vaccination programme is aimed at:

• Young people born between 1 September 2007 and 31 August 2008
• People under 25 starting higher education for the first time
• People under 25 starting residential further education for the first time
• Eligible international students under 25

Two doses of the MenB vaccine are needed for protection, given at least 28 days apart.

Eligible young people can book online: https://orlo.uk/G99pe or visit a participating pharmacy.

Or young people can attend the Southend Vaccination Event on Thursday 29 October, at the Forum Library Southend SS1 1NS where the MenB vaccine will be available for eligible young people.
Meningitis and septicaemia can become serious very quickly. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and help prevent the spread of disease.

Southend-on-Sea City Council has launched its annual Toy Drive ahead of the 2026 festive season.

The successful initiative, now in its 13th year, has seen 44,702 donations reach more than 21,200 children and young people.

The council hopes to expand its efforts this year to reach even more children who might not receive a Christmas gift without the community's generosity.

This scheme will run until Tuesday 15 December.
