🌙🦇 WILDLIFE AFTER DARK: A HALLOWEEN EVENING AT THE GARDEN 🦇🌙

Ever wondered what happens at St Andrews Botanic Garden when the sun goes down? 👀

Join us on Friday 30 October, 4–6pm, for a special Halloween evening exploring the secret world of the wildlife that wakes up as we’re heading home! 🌳✨

🌙 Hollie, the Garden’s Education Lead, will introduce you to some of the fascinating nocturnal wildlife found in and around the Garden – how they’re adapted for life after dark, the clues they leave behind and why gardens and green spaces are so important for them.

Then we’ll turn our attention to one of Halloween’s most famous creatures… BATS! 🦇

Scotland is home to 10 species of bat, and we’ll be joined by bat experts from the University of St Andrews to learn more about these amazing flying mammals.

As dusk falls, we’ll head out with bat detectors to listen for their ultrasonic echolocation calls and, hopefully, spot some bats heading out on their evening hunt. 🔊🦇

They are completely wild, of course, so we can’t guarantee where or when they’ll appear – no paid bat actors here! 😄

And after our adventures in the dark, we’ll gather around the fire for hot chocolate and vegan marshmallows. 🔥☕️

📅 Friday 30 October
⏰ 4–6pm
📍 St Andrews Botanic Garden

🥾 Wrap up warm, wear sturdy footwear and come prepared for the Scottish autumn weather – much of our adventure will take place outdoors as darkness falls.

🎟️ Places are limited and advance booking is essential. See our Eventbrite page for details.

Come and discover what really flutters, scurries and rustles in the Garden after dark… 🎃🌙🦇

Autumn lights in the Botanic Garden today. The trees are coming into their peak colours now, with the Ashes in particular glowing bright against the conifers and clear blue skies.

In the first picture you can see two American ashes (Fraxinus latifolia and Fraxinus pennsylvanica var. subintegerrum) with their golden leaves, and in the second picture, the maples amongst the sand dunes.

Come and join us this Saturday when there’ll be apple picking and pressing with , the Dundee Naturalists doing a slug recording day (10.30-3pm), and the Fife Tree Wardens on tour in the Garden in the afternoon (1.30-3pm).

🍎🍂 Celebrating Mabon at Little Oaks! ☀️🌿

What a beautiful sunny morning we had at Little Oaks today! This week we celebrated Mabon – the autumn equinox, a traditional celebration marking the changing of the seasons and a time to appreciate the harvest and all that nature has given us. 🍁

Our Little Oaks got stuck into a gorgeous morning of autumn-inspired play and making. We:

🌼 picked edible flowers and leaves from our Edible Meadow to make a fresh garden salad
🍎 baked cinnamon apples over the fire
🫐 used blueberry juice to create our own tie-dye bunting
💜 squished, rolled and created with homemade blueberry play-doh
🧘 and finished our morning with apple tree yoga in the apple orchard!

Sunshine, muddy hands, smoky apples, squishy play-doh and lots of time spent together outdoors – a pretty lovely way to welcome autumn. 💚🍂

🌲 NEXT WEEK: SURVIVAL SKILLS! 🔥
We'll be heading outdoors for another morning of play, exploration and adventure inspired by some of the skills we need to survive in the wild!

👶 Little Oaks is suitable for children aged 0–7 and their grown-ups.

Keep an eye on our Eventbrite page for booking details. 🌿🐿️

Autumn is here- glorious colour from the Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) nudging out of the canopy, with the Sorbus and Cornus trees elsewhere turning gold and red.

It’s a windy day here, so parts of the Garden are closed for the time being- but on the plus side, there should be lots of leaves to see and play with tomorrow!

St Andrews Botanic Garden in the news! Did you catch us on Beechgrove the other day? It was great to talk to the Beechgrove Garden team about the experimental projects here and if you missed it then you can catch up on iPlayer, just look out for episode 119.

And it was a great pleasure to talk to Annie Guilfoyle and Noel Kingsbury for the latest Garden Masterclass Thursday podcast and a chance to go into more detail about why we’re doing these experiments and what we hope to discover about the futures of plants. Head over to the Garden Masterclass channel on YouTube to find the full episode.

If you’d like to join in or find out more, why not come to the next meeting of Graft on Thursday 27th August, where Hollie Sylvester will be talking about her work into the radical possibilities of growing from seed. For details check out the Graft instagram page or book your place through Eventbrite.

Spot the botanist competition! There are twelve people in these four photographs, how many can you see?!

This week we have been surveying plant communities in the Angus Glens, Dunblane, Fife’s south coast and here in the Botanic Garden, building a unique database for the Tangled Bank programme that investigates the ecological relationships between plants and people, and how we humans are shaping evolutionary futures… and along the way, working with some extraordinary landscapes.

Thank you to Forestry and Land, Scotland, 4 Front Farming, and the Holme Hill project in Dunblane for working with us on this programme.

The weather forecast is appalling, with full sun and high temperatures every day for the foreseeable. What could be better than keeping cool with a nice meadow view, dappled shade and maybe even a book or a blether?
