South Oxfordshire District Council has published advice to help communities prepare for the winter months.

Are you prepared for winter? ❄️

As the colder and wetter months roll in, we are encouraging everyone to be as 'winter prepared' as possible.

We have put together ‘Be Winter Prepared’ a seasonal initiative packed with practical advice, local events, and signposting to support to help you stay warm, well, connected and prepared this winter.

It brings together a wide range of services and resources from the council and partner organisations, including community activities, health advice, and support services to help us all through the tougher winter months.

🚆 Rail Travel Disruption to London

Residents planning rail journeys should be aware of major engineering works affecting services to and from London Paddington on:

📅 28-29 November
📅 27 December to 3 January

During these periods, most Great Western Railway services will start and terminate at Reading rather than London Paddington. Passengers travelling to London will need to use alternative routes and should allow extra time for their journeys.

Anyone travelling over these dates is strongly advised to check their journey before travelling.

More information can be found on the National Rail website: 🔗

Upgrades to Dolphin Junction near Slough will affect journeys to and from London Paddington on 28 and 29 November, and at Christmas 2026

Whether you're a regular bus user, an occasional passenger, or want better public transport options in the future, this is a key opportunity to share your views.

📅 The consultation is open until 17 November.
👉 Take part online here:

Thank you to everyone (130 people!) who came to Sunday’s screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing at the Great Hall and joined discussions afterwards.

Having a shared awareness of the challenges we face has never been more important.

Look out for more screenings run by the community soon. And put the evening of 8th November in your diary for the next meeting on local action - to reduce our impact, share knowledge and build resilience. Everyone is welcome and needed.

Sadly due to the poor apple harvest this year the community Apple Afternoon (3rd October) is being cancelled.

The low yield of apples seen this autumn is primarily due to the heat and drought conditions over the spring and summer months.

Additionally, a larger population of apple ermine moths has added to the problem. Caterpillars of the moth defoliate trees, reducing the number of apples produced. The rise of ermine moth numbers during 2026 has been exacerbated due to the hot and dry summer.

We apologise for this and very much hope next year’s apple harvest will be better.

📢 At its September meeting, Cholsey Parish Council agreed to ask Oxfordshire County Council to proceed with a formal consultation on a proposed residents' parking scheme in Cholsey. This follows concerns raised by residents about the impact of station-related parking in parts of the village.

We know this is a topic that generates strong and differing views, and councillors did not reach this decision lightly. Requesting a formal consultation is not the same as approving a scheme. Rather, it ensures that residents and businesses have the opportunity to comment on any proposals before decisions are made.

The next step will be for Oxfordshire County Council to develop a draft scheme for Cholsey. This would then be followed by the public consultation, which is currently anticipated to take place in January.

At the same time, we continue to pursue additional parking provision for both cars and cycles at Cholsey Station. While this is outside the parish council's direct control, we recognise its importance to residents and rail users and will continue to press for progress.

We encourage everyone with an interest in this issue to take part in the consultation when it is launched and make their views known.

On Sunday 27th Sept, Cholsey Great Hall is showing the People's Emergency Briefing. This screening, in our community, is one of over 3600 being shown across the UK, bringing together people from local communities to hear the latest evidence about the climate and nature crisis, and to discuss how to respond (https://www.nebriefing.org/screening-map). It follows on from a National Emergency Briefing (Nov 2025), where leading experts presented the latest information to politicians and other influential people in Westminster. The experts delivered information on risks facing the UK but also importantly all speakers offer credible hope if action is taken now. The film is recommended for 16 and above.
